Director Series Review: Quentin Tarantino

By far one of my favorite directors of the modern day is Quentin Tarantino.  I first discovered his cinematic genius back when I accidently ended up at a showing of Pulp Fiction.  That movie has remained my favorite of all of his and it was fortunate that it was my introduction to the man, as he has not always proven to be the amazing director that his certainly is.  Here, I will attempt to look at Tarantino’s career and explain why he makes some of the greatest films ever yet still manages to fall short of perfection on many occasions due to his lack of foresight.

Slow cooker: The only dorm appliance you need

It's back to school season, which means that a whole new crop of college students are heading out to life in dorms and cheap apartments across the country. It can be difficult to adjust to cooking everything for yourself, and many student accommodations have limited (if any) permissions for food machines.

But here's what I wish someone had told me, way back when I first shipped off to college: if there is any way you can swing it, get a slow cooker (a.k.a. Crock Pot).

Kendrys Morales for 2014

.

Q.  Has Kendrys Morales "regressed" since his hot streak?

A.  It was so hot in July that I saw two trees fighting over a dog ... with Morales In The Zone, everybody was all like "We gotta give this guy a $14M qualifying offer!!", especially offsite.  From 7/9/13 to 8/7/13, Kendrys batted .380 with a .621 SLG, and the visual sight of that had people in XTC.

Now it turns out that he can't hit .380 forever, and people are like "whooooa, check that, he's regressed."  No.  He hasn't "regressed."  Kendrys is who he is.  Saying that it is KENDRYS who has REGRESSED takes all of the responsibility off of us as analysts!  It's an evasion of accountability.

Cap't Jack's attitude:  let the season play out.  "It remains to be seen" is a Zduriencik catchphrase.  He'll phone a friend, ask the audience, and then make his Final Answer on a QO ... this winter.

.

Q.  Would a 125 OPS+ be "mediocre" for a DH?

A.  Once again, you can always find a player who does that for three months ... and then you can assume that it's no problemo to grab a "replacement level" 125 OPS+ slugger for $427,000 who will hit fourth and drive in the big run off Jared Weaver and Yu Darvish, series after series.

Kendrys isn't a mediocre hitter.  Get that straight.  He is a rawhide-tough Middle of the Order (MOTO) hitter.  He can hit 4th, he has hit 4th, and he deserves to hit 4th.  He's done it for contending teams.

You and I can argue about this all day long.  Rest assured that in the GMs' offices, they aren't arguing.  Kendrys is an RBI man.  He will get paid as such.

Hot Dog Legs: New Tumblr fad

This summer's annoying photography trend is Instagrams of legs from an angle such that they look like hot dogs. On purpose? Probably not. Presumably it's a vanity thing. But the truth is, those legs look like hot dogs.

The new single-serving Tumblr Hot-Dog Legs not only hyphenates its title correctly, it also collects these photos so that you can marvel over them and try to figure out which ones are people legs, and which ones are delicious meat products.

China zoo tries to pass dog off as a lion

China has a pretty big problem with fraud, from knock-off Prada bags to fake soy sauce made from human hair. But surely this one takes the cake: a zoo in the central province of Henan put a dog (a Tibetan mastiff, the breed shown in the picture above) in the lion cage. Visitors also pointed out that a dog was in the wolf cage, and the leopard cage contained only a white fox.

What are you reading?

Yesterday I picked out a huge armful of books at the library. This is the danger of arriving early to a program, folks! We were there for Ms. M’s wonderful songs, storytelling, crafts and even a visit from Z the therapy dog, but since we arrived early I had time to browse. So I brought home an armload of books. Here are these books plus the two I’m already reading from an interlibrary loan; what parenting books (or other books, for that matter) are you reading right now?

The Turnspit Dog: A breed developed specifically for turning cooking spits

Add this to the list of things I randomly learned from Metafilter: the "Turnspit Dog" was a short, terrier-like breed of British dog which was developed specifically for the purpose of turning cooking spits.  And on Sunday, people would bring them to church to sit on their feet and keep them warm.

Dogs yawn more when they watch their owners than strangers

Everyone knows that yawning is contagious, even between species. But a recent study has shown that dogs are twice as likely to "catch" a yawn from their owners than from strangers. Researchers theorize it's related to empathy, but are uncertain as to exactly how.

(I just yawned three times while typing this. Did you yawn while reading it?)
