New DVD releases: ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ ‘Gravity’ and ‘Nebraska’

I must confess: I’ve been itching to see Thor: The Dark World since it was released in theaters back in November. Things were too busy and simply too hectic for us to make the time back then, but I have zero excuses now, because Thor 2 is out on DVD and Blu-ray this week! I’ve mentioned before that Thor is actually my favorite of the recent Marvel offerings. I expect I’ll love this sequel equally. How could I not? Because, Chris Hemsworth, y’all.

Box office preview: Only one big new release

After several weeks of enjoying expanding releases of several notable Oscar-nominated movies, this weekend's offerings look mighty slim. In fact, there is only one major new wide release: the action-fantasy flick I, Frankenstein, starring Aaron Eckhart as Dr. Frankenstein's famous monster. To each his own, but this movie doesn't appeal much to me at all.

More awards: Critics' Choice Awards nominations are out

I'm fully immersed in crazy awards season happenings now. Things are happening so quickly, it's difficult to keep track. This week, the 19th Critics' Choice Movie Awards nominations were announced, and I'm paying close attention. Nominees for these awards are quite often also Academy Award nominees. If you're into this sort of thing, take note: A few films are clearly separating from the rest of the pack now.

SAG Award nominations honor some of Hollywood's best

I've already established that I'm a movie awards junkie, and I couldn't be happier that some of the bigger nominations are being announced right now. This week, the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were released, and while  I'm having a great time formulating some of my own predictions, I'm holding off on making final decisions until I've seen all of the films myself. For now, we'll just take a look at some of the bigger nominees.

No surprises at the box office

This was, by all accounts, a pretty thin weekend for movie debuts. Just one major motion picture opened (The Best Man Holiday), and we're sandwiched between two blockbuster openings (Thor: The Dark World and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire). Still, movie goers did turn out in force, sending the Thor sequel to the top, once again, but showing a lot of support for Best Man Holiday as well.

Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition, season 2 episode 9 recap

This week's theme was "Nightmares," nicely timed to coincide with Halloween, and the focus was technique. Tough one here, and you know Abby is going to be all over everyone twice as much as usual.

The initial challenge was a ballet combo. It came down to McKaylee and Kalani, but McKaylee won by a hair. She earned the right to choose which two dancers would get the week's only duet (the other three dancers would each receive solos). Although she was nervous about having to perform a solo herself, McKaylee decided to put JoJo and Kalani into the duet together.

Spec's College Nickel Package -- Week 7

October 19 -- Florida State at Clemson

The Seminoles are back in the heat of the conversation after a 63-0 thrashing of Maryland, which was their fifth straight impressive win behind redshirt freshman QB Jameis Winston.

Winston has put himself on the fringes of the Heisman discussion, a location already firmly held by Clemson QB Tajh Boyd.

Florida State has a bye week, so it's a lock to go into this game 5-0, while the Tigers must get past Boston College in order to carry a 6-0 mark into the contest.

Spec's College Nickel Package -- Week 5

1. Lane Kiffin is Undefeated!

Three head coaching jobs ... three acrimonious departures!

Losing conference games by 10-7 and then 62-41 at least provided some variety.

The USC brass didn't pull him off the field in the third quarter, but they did pull him off the team bus after the game in order to hand him the pink slip.

2. Sarkisian Intrigue

Spec's College Nickel Package -- Week 3

1. Alabama 49, Texas A & Manziel 42

Does Nick Saban own college football like it's a family-reunion game of touch being played in his backyard?

Pretty much.

Let's see: passion, money, athletes, much-googled girlfriends?  The Tide's got it all.

One thing they didn't have was a victory over Johnny Football.  Now they've got that too.

Next checkpoint on the road to the three-peat?

Nov. 9 vs. LSU.
