Giant killer hornets plaguing China

There have been several incidents recently of people in China being attacked by swarms of Asian giant hornets. Each hornet is several inches long, and about the size and shape of half a hot dog. They attack in swarms, and 21 people have died this year in one Chinese province alone. Some experts believe that global warming will facilitate the spread of these enormous and terrifying wasps. Eek.

An Urban Adventure in Macau

For couples that want a more active urban adventure, consider taking a vacation to the Chinese region of Macau.  This city is filled from top to bottom with things to do and sights to see.  Whether you want to visit the opera, listen to live music or take in a theater performance, it’s all there.  Enjoy perusing the many museums, galleries, temples, gardens and other historic attractions.  And, of course, there is plenty of gambling in this city, from top-notch casinos to horse and dog races.  At night, head out on the town and enjoy the wide selection of dance clubs, pubs, b

Spinning with rolags vs "fauxlags"

First things first: as far as I have been able to determine, there is no functional difference between rolags and "fauxlags." It's just one of those things where spinners insist that you get the jargon right.

A rolag is a little burrito of fiber which is created by using hand cards. You card the fiber, and then carefully roll it off the hand cards into a tube. It's like a very small batt, about the size of a hot dog, with light, airy, fluffy fibers.

You label me, I label you

I posted another piece about why I don’t share photos of Wood Sprite on Facebook anymore, and some friends pointed out that the author seems to be a bit hypocritical when you see other posts she’s written. Fair enough, but I stand by the fact that our kids should get to decide when their online presences begin, who owns their photos and what is shared about them.

The toaster oven: Second-best choice for college students

Last week I extolled the virtues of the slow cooker for the new college student. The slow cooker allows you to cook a lot of cheap, healthy meals while you are away at class (or in the library studying hard WINK WINK). The toaster oven is the polar opposite of the slow cooker, and just as valuable.
