Movie review: 'American Hustle'

If you read the headline carefully, you won't be surprised to find that I'm positively gushing about David O. Russell's latest effort, American Hustle. Not only is it a perfectly cast film, it's one of the best 70s-era films I've ever seen. And no, this is not a perfect film, but it's wonderfully wicked at times and absolutely brilliantly acted by an ensemble cast that left me gobsmacked. Yep, I said gobsmacked. Points for using that in a sentence today?

Christmas movies streaming on Netflix

After suffering through the woefully inadequate selection of Thanksgiving-themed movies, we are finally being rewarded. That's right, I'm talking about Christmas movies! My personal list of favorite holiday movies is really long, so I'll spare you the details, but I did find several of them streaming on Netflix last night. My tastes vary from sentimental Christmas movies to hilarious depictions of the ultimate in family Christmastime dysfunction, but one thing never changes: I can watch most of these over and over, and never tire of them.

Adding intrigue to the 2014 off-season

In a more simple time, Mike Brown was the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. In this simple time, Brown had a simple coaching philosophy: Give the ball to Lebron James. This strategy led to multiple playoff wins and one run at the NBA championship. Though it ended titleless, this was the hay day for Cleveland basketball fans. Now, after introducing the complications of Big Threes and stints in La La Land, Mike Brown may be returning to simple times and simple strategies in Cleveland.

What is the most boring book you have ever read?

Upon discovering a list declaring the most boring books of all time, there's at least one choice I disagreed with: Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. What, that well-crafted tale of a young girl who narrates not only life in a small southern town in the Great Depression, but also how she witnessed both gross injustice in the form of the railroading of innocent black man Tom Robinson and high moral courage on the part of her attorney father Atticus Finch boring? Yeah right!
