Yes, yes, this is BAVASI-esque! OH NO! Bail, people, BAIL! Become a Cardinals fan. Do SOMETHING! But don't subject yourself to another MINUTE of Mariners GMs.

We're too smart for that, DaddyO. Don't worry, it's all part of our super-smart plan because we've figured out how to optimize #Baseball with our spreadsheet voodoo magic. Who needs killers in the bullpen or young pitchers with upside? Reducing downside is the key to victory. 25 civics, that's how you do it. Did we get transported back to 2005 suddenly? At least we do have SOME talent on the roster already... but right now I don't know how much more of it we've actually added this offseason despite the adorable game of musical chairs. ~G

I can't believe my eyes. I just read about what we gave up for Miley. This is insanity. Give up Carson Smith? Why not just sign Iwakuma and keep Smith?

How much do you envy Scott Servais walking into that clubhouse in spring training and trying to win over the players to the 'new way'?

Was anyone here a fan of the #Kansas_City Royals starting rotation in 2015? The pieces we have on hand could be as good or better in 2016. Adding some depth like Miley would surely be better than what they got from Jeremy Guthrie. Felix is our Volquez. Paxton or Walker provide what Yordano did (or better).

So we got back Miley, who is less talented and more expensive than Elias (but about as productive), and gave up a closer-arm for a decent baby bullpenner. Yeesh.

So essentially it was Trumbo, Iwakuma, Smith and Elias for Miley and $9m you won't spend.

Unbelievable.

Are we sure DiPoto isn't still on the Red Sox payroll? I mean, on the surface this looks like absolute, complete highway robbery of epic proportions. I'm incredulous.

Miley and Aro to Mariners for Carson Smith and Roenis Elias. Per Jon Heyman. WHAT.

Miley suffers from pitching in #Boston (ERA is 3.60 on the road) so I'm sure he won't mind moving to the Safe. It will protect him from his lack of an arsenal. He's basically Jason Vargas. He's under contract for 3 more years (with a 4th year option) so at least we have his rights for a minute if we add him. The Red Sox traded 3 players for him a year ago, though, so I don't know what they'll want for their so-far "league average" arm. We'll see how many more system players get moved out for mediocre returns this offseason.

ugh...looked at his pitch types and such...90-91 mph fastball without much lateral bite and with some sink...change-up is the only pitch that gets good results...classic groveler type. SwS% is very low...and dropping...scuse me while I barf.

at least he's paid lightly. 7.6 mil per year. Leaves 9-10 mil to add relievers and a first baseman assuming the payroll stays constant.

the plus with Miley is no injury #History and not horrible. But...that's not much of a plus. I consider him basically garbage.

Miley looks to have some real value as a league average innings eater. But what we need is one more certifiable upper tier starter. Until we see Walker and/or Paxton (A) stay healthy, and (B) progress enough to start to realize their full potential, we are Felix plus four guys.

Doc predicted/cursed Kuma to the Dodgers in a snide remark about three years ago. We were having one of those Kuma is better than Felix discussions, when Doc stated: "Felix is the face of the franchise. Kuma is going to be a Dodger in three years." This may be the longest called shot in SSI #History. I can't even find the original discussion.

#Boston and #New_York fans assume the rest of the world exists to feed them their best players while they give up average players.

You guys should read the comments from Red Sox fans in response to Rosenthal's tweet about Miley. THey are friggin' hilariously delusional. "Hoping for Seager...probably Carson Smith..."...but they all agree on one thing...the Mariners have NOTHING to offer in trade. And I agree with them. This team is hollow and full of guys we can't give up or guys no one wants.

Miley is nothing special at all. A fungible, very cheap, 1-1.5 WAR SP. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I don't know anything about Miley, but I'll give him this. He puts up right around 200 innings per year and consistentlyl makes 32 starts.

56
12/7/15 11:21am

I'm fine with Miley. Proven decent innings eater. Let's try a different #Style of #Baseball where we continue to upgrade our bullpen and utiluze our newly acquire speed players to steal some of those close ballgames in innings 7-8-9. Lately we've had too much of the reverse with fine SP wasted by the bullpen and black holes through the lineup.

57
DaddyO's picture

In fact, DiPoto had better be some sort of Beane-level genius, I'd say at this point.

58
DaddyO's picture
12/7/15 11:17am

If a Miley trade transpires, then DiPoto's first year will hinge on the performance of Karns and Miley. DiPoto had better ACTUALLY know his stuff as opposed to THINKING he knows his stuff. We've had WAY too much of the latter around here for a LONG, LONG time.

59
DaddyO's picture
12/7/15 11:16am

So now it looks like a Mariners - Sox Miley trade is progressing per MLBTR. Apparently DiPoto has some #History with Miley and really likes him. We'd better hope that those whom DiPoto likes do better than those who Jack liked.
