The Good Ship Mariner
Will she sink?

A ball to the hand
And a troubling suspension
Has troubled our order
and grabbed our attention

Our trump card is gone
and morale takes a blow
Now on everyone’s mind:
‘Who replaces Cano?’

Are we doomed to repeat
the mistakes of the past?
Is the obvious choice
too obscure for the brass?

Will the Mariner mage
make a ‘magical’ choice
and promote from three-A
another uninspired voice?

Will the wheeler draw one
from the deck ‘o the trade
and surrender too much
for the deal-ee-oh made?

Will we see again over
and over Ad naus’
the frittering flailing
of the not-quite-enough cause?

‘Tis the Mariner style --
whack from ages before
while the bluer fans cry
“Could you do a bit more?”

So surely we’re doomed
history to repeat
when we just need a hand
what we’ll get is left feet

But wait now you say
“Things may not be the same --
Why, they’re shifting Dee Gordon
to his natural game!”

Perhaps we misjudge
the lead Jedi of blue
Can it be that he sees
the same things that we do?

Decades of disappointment
trained us to believe
that never things change
that hope is a sieve

All we Johnny-come-earlies
are expecting much worse
Like a family vacation
to stay in a hearse

Is it remotely thinkable?
Is it possibly ought?
That this dank ray of doom
Isn’t as dark as we thought?

Is a silvering sliver
now lining our cloud?
Dare we consider this good
without laughing out loud?

Is the boon that we have
in the midst of this trial
10 million semolians
with which Jer may beguile

A pitcher whose arm
isn’t soon to fall off
and an outfielding hitter
with grit and with loft

Confusticate and bebother --
now my mind’s in a flip
Could it be that Dipoto
may just right this ship?
