Sounders Beat Earthquakes
Final score 2-0

The Seattle Sounders are on a roll. Last week, we saw a victory against the Columbus Crew with a 1-0 victory. This week the Sounders beat the San Jose Earthquakes with an even wider margin of victory with a score of 2-0. It was Clint Dempsey’s second goal of the season, but it was Jordan Morris’s fourth in as many games, impressing his fans in Seattle even more than last week’s victory. Morris, too, is on a roll.

Dempsey made the first goal during the 26’ with assists from Erik Friberg and Jordan Morris. Morris sent the ball into the penalty area and Friberg sent it to Dempsey for the shot, volleying the ball into the top corner of the net. Morris’s goal, assisted by Osvaldo Alonso, was from outside the penalty area. He is now part of a tie for MLS all-time rookie scoring streak record and it’s still early in the season. Months ago we were reserved about getting excited over Morris when the drama over his selection went down, but he is proving his worth on that field every day and Seattle sure is happy to have him with us.

This game was particularly satisfying since Seattle has lost their last five games to the Earthquakes, and they’ve only won three out of their last 13 matches with the team. Fans were celebrating hard on Saturday night after this win. Of the match, Seattle Sounders Head Coach Sigi Schmid said, “The objective of this homestand was to get six points. I felt confident that it was time for things to turn our way.” Osvaldo Alonso was issued a caution during the match, and there were a total of 15 shots made during the game—four of those form Morris.

With Friberg back, we also saw a different lineup this weekend. Midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz was surely happy to be back in the game after recovering from his thigh injury that kept him from participating in the last match and reaping the rewards of that victory. The lineup for the match included Stefan Frei; Tyrone Mears, Brad Evans – captain, Chad Marshall; Joevin Jones; Osvaldo Alonso, Erik Friberg (Cristian Roldan 72’), Clint Dempsey; Aaron Kovar (Nelson Valdez 64’) Herculez Gomez (Andreas Ivanschitz 85’) and Jordan Morris, with subs Tyler Miller, Dylan Remick, Zach Scott and Oalex Anderson sitting out. The next match will be on May 14 against Dallas on their turf.
