During Saturday’s Seattle Sounders match against the Columbus Crew SC, fans cheered hard as Jordan Morris made his third goal in as many games, winning the match with a final score of 1-0. It was a late match goal after a long period of no goals from either team, and the tension felt by the crowd was palpable once it was finally scored. Fans also went wild over the goal on social media. Analysts are saying that it is Morris’s confidence that made this last goal happen, and Head Coach Sigi Schmid agrees.

“We said once he got that first goal, then he’ll feel better about himself and he’ll have that weight off his shoulders. Now he feels more confident,” he says. Regarding the whole match, he commented, “They were a little bit better in the first half than we were. We made a couple of errors that we were lucky we didn’t pay for. I thought in the second half we were more on the front foot. I thought we were better overall and I thought we were justly rewarded with a goal.”

Morris himself spoke of the pressure of scoring as well as the satisfaction that comes with it. “You get that pressure off your back. Each game you don’t score, you’re feeling more and more pressure and it kind of eats at you while you’re playing. You just go out there and play a little freer and with more confidence and goals like the goal today kind of just come. Games get more fun. You don’t think as much.”

Schmid said that the key to the game itself was better footing during the second half of the match. Schmid hopes to take all six points from his team’s two-game homestead, and it could happen as long as they win against the San Jose Earthquakes next weekend.
