Mariners Minor League News for August 26
Two promotions to Clinton ... Hultzen & Maurer slated for Arizona ... etc.

If you were following over the weekend, you know that D.J. Peterson had surgery related to a broken jaw incurred when he was hit by a pitch on Thursday.

What you don't know (probably) is that fellow LumberKing Timmy Lopes (Talk40 #20) went on the disabled list as well with shoulder issues.

So two spots to fill.

  • Promotion 1: Zach Shank, a 28th-round draft pick who's played mostly at second.  He's one of the "Tom McNamara Northeast College Guys" from Marist in Poughkeepsie.  He's hitting .231/.322/.360 so he didn't get the call because of his bat.  Also, don't confuse (as I have at times) Zach Shank with Chantz Mack.  Mack is a 29th-round draft pick.  Mack, as you may know, recently jumped up to AA Jackson.

  • Promotion 2: Luis Caballero, a 20-year-old from Panama.  Yes, Panamanian.  You don't see that too much.  Caballero was the Player to be Named Later in the 2011 trade of Jack Wilson to the Braves.

Jack Wilson was traded to the Braves in 2011?  I have no recollection of that.  Anyway, that's how the M's got Luis Caballero.  He's worth roughly one month of 2011-vintage Jack Wilson.  You do the math.  He was hitting .281/.385/.327 in the Arizona Rookie League.

Also, Shannon Drayer reports that Danny Hultzen (Talk40 #4) and Brandon Maurer (Talk40 #9) will pitch in the Arizona Fall League, and a offers a strong hint that Taijuan Walker (Talk40 #2) may get a shot or two in Seattle come September.
