Figgins SS

 ..........

Whoop!  Sudden development, as Figgins takes the 6 spot in the intrasquad.

Reminds me of a Robert A. Heinlein novel, where you've got a table for two.  Suddenly, a dark red spot appears on your dinner partner's chest, his head settles into his spaghetti ... the staff hustles the man away by the elbows, and re-sets the table in 30 seconds.  More wine, sir?

Funny the way a homer and a double can get the staff bustling around, isn't it.  Vinnie knocks the fences down at 1 p.m., and a freshly-minted shortstop glove is in Figgy's locker at midnight.  Jack, I love you, man.

.............

SSI is on the record as taking the under, the very under, on Ryan's games played for 2012.  And for 2013, 014, 015 ..... 2068.

Whitey Herzog took over the Cardinals and had a minor star playing SS, Garry Templeton.  Templeton was, we read in The White Rat, a prima donna and an unreliable commodity.  Whitey said, quote, I've got to have a shortstop I can count on, and traded a boatload (Templeton and Sixto Lezcano) for an unappreciated Ozzie Smith...

SSI doesn't like where this is going, this thing about Ryan sleeping with his neck in semi-traction every night.  Stop me if you've heard this one!  They've had allllllll winter, and spring training has started, and oh yeah!  He should be ready in a day or two, and

Bah humbug.  Just call the game on account'a rain, before somebody gets hit by the baseball.

...........

I never understood in the FIRST place why Chone Figgins wasn't a shortstop.  He's got the arm for third, right?  I'll guarantee you the guy can throw as hard as Omar Vizquel ever could.

He'd have been a bat-first shortstop, but a good one, I'll bet you.  Has anybody ever moved to short at 34?  Well, utility players move to increased duties at SS all the time.  Seager's doing it now.

Well, Pete Rose was a big left fielder from ages 26 to 33, and then he moved in to the very demanding position of third base at the age of 34.  He was in the top 5 in the MVP voting the next two years.  Lemme go look for other precedents ....

It is generally undesirable to move a veteran toward the right of the defensive spectrum.  This doesn't mean that the general principle carries the absolute inviolability of a law of physics.

By the way, Figgins has played 27 major league games at shortstop, with 4 errors and a range factor solidly above average.  The last time was in 2006.  Why the Angels didn't see him as a shortstop, it would be interesting to hear.

.............

Does this bring back the "confusion factor," their asking Figgins to play a new and very challenging position?

Well, we have good reason to believe that the coherency factor comes from Figgins' leadoff spot, that reason being Figgins' own statement.  At this point, you've got to believe that Figgins would appreciate 600 PA's at leadoff, even if he were playing center field.

ULTIMATE 513-RUN-HUMILIATION MULCHIFIER

1 Figgins, ss Promises us a .350 OBP if he gets to, can I huh can I
2 Ackley, 2b Over-under on RC/27 is about 6.0
3 Ichiro, rf Will stand there watching Ackley's wrist hinge aallllll season
4 Montero, c YANKEE fans expect him to be M's best hitter in 2012
5 Carp, lf Has been a 30-35 homer man for two years now
6 Smoak, 1b
7 Catricala, 3b Here's my dark horse bet for a 1984 AD season
8 Fielder, dh Oh yeah.  Well, trade for Upton or something
9 Gutierrez, cf Batted balls apparently no longer limited to 290 feet

Don't know how many runs these guys would score in a year's time, but the year-end total would not have a 5 in front of it.

.........

A bit of whimsy on some of that, but not as to Figgins playing short.  We know, we know.  The appearance at SS about versatility, not about Figgy starting at SS.

But here's hopin'.  If it turned out that the M's were comfortable with that, they could save themselves some disillusionment on Ryan's 2012 season.  Not to mention a shot at a Vinnie Catricala movie.

Figgins got moved to 2B and played like dung there all year in 2010...and whined about being moved...and was out of his comfort zone.  He ain't gonna like short any better.

1.  Nobody around here has been more abusive of the idea of Figgins at 3B than I.  We simply had better options.....even before Catricala was poised to go all Bob Horner on AL pitchers. (Horner, btw, went straight from Arizona State to the 3B with the Atlanta Braves, with nary a farm league stop, and won the '78  ROY.  Isn't AA generally regarded as a bit better, or at least equivalent, of D1?  Don't remember Horner?  He also was regarded for his compact stroke...and not quite known for his glove. Sound familiar?  Was originally thought a bit pudgy...later got more chiseled. He could flat out hit. )
2. I was early in calling for a Seager-at-SS effort.  Idea being that we add bats.
3. Ergo:  I will not complain if Figgins is a SS to allow us to get a 3B bat in the lineup.
4. If Catricala is Bob Horner-lite (no pun intended) then make this so.

Even before his first as a Mariner, there were Angel blogs saying what a mistake the M's were making by moving Figgins to 2B and batting him second. Those sites said that Chone could not handle ANY change immediately.
That proved correct when the Angels moved Chone to 3rd.
That proved correct when the M's moved Chone to 2nd.
That proved correct when the M's moved Chone back to 3rd.
That proved correct when the M's moved Chone to 9th in the order.
Please do not move Chone again!!!

...A- professional baseball (Midwest League and the South Atlantic League).  AA professional baseball leaves college ball in the dust.

The guy who in 2010 had the 5.3 RC/27 and the .372 OBP and the 59 walks and the 2.6 (b-ref) offensive WAR (which would have, yes, led the Ms in 2011 and been 2nd in 2010).

...get the feeling that someone sat down with Figgy either during sometime near the end of the season or perhaps just after the season ended and had a serious heart-to-heart conversation with him?
As far as the sudden movement of Catricala from the OF to 3rd, well, we can speculate until the cows come home without knowing all of the variables that are involved.  But, that is part of the fun, eh?

Here's hoping that, as he's been dragged, 1, 2, 3, 4 steps against his liking, that a "bounceback" of two steps towards his liking will create the the happy happy-joy Chone...

Like did you ever read FOUL!, about Connie Hawkins?  Teamwide simpatico heart-to-hearts were a monthly thing.
In baseball, they do dinner tables for four, I guess ...
