Mark Trumbo
now THAT's what I call flexibility of mind ... ummm

.

The first baseball site I hit, other than youse' guys Think Tank and BJOL, is the Mariners' own site.  Greg Johns has good judgment.  He's got several interesting articles up.  One of them was:

.

MARK TRUMBO

Here is the link.  As Johns points out, Dipoto has two GM gigs on his resume and he has shed Mark Trumbo as many times.  And as you know, this roster has no use for has little need for Mark Trumbo.  Therefore, Dipoto believes that Trumbo has leaped a major plateau, that Mark Trumbo is now a much better hitter than he used to be.

Here's the kicker:  Trumbo is looking at a 4-year deal!  Whence Vogelbach and O'Neill?  Opportunism, baby...

In a chess position, you have 12 principles all relevant and all competing against each other.  One of the principles in play for Jerry Dipoto is the Robinson Cano / Nelson Cruz window.  Keep that one in mind.

....

What could be Trumbo's big improvement?  If it exists in the real world, and not just in the random noise of an HR/F luck stat?

Jeff Sullivan answered that for us.  It's hard to say how you could improve on this article.  The bottom line:  Trumbo isn't hitting the ball more often.  But when he does hit the ball, he is making outstanding contact.  In fact he is currently the #2 player in the major leagues behind Giancarlo Stanton, in terms of good things happening once he connects.  This kind of player is not boring to watch.

Sully's logic was that an improvement can come from:

  • Fishing less often
  • Hitting the ball more often in the zone
  • Doing better things with the ball once you hit it

Bill James' classic analysis uses 4 things instead of 3; he divides that last thing into (a) how hard you hit the ball and (b) how often you pull it in the air.   Some guys legitimately hit .600 when they pull the ball in the air.

Hitting the ball hard is ---> strength and bat (through) speed.  Pulling the ball in the air is --- > a separate thing.  AIRPULL is not a random stat.  You could alternatively call it the "I SAW THAT ONE COMING DOWN 6th AVENUE!" stat.  There is no reason a hitter wouldn't get better at anticipating.

... it all boils down to, are you getting your pitch (whether that is out-and-over, or whatever) and then planting the back leg.  These "correctly guessed Back Leg Specials" are not found in any website's hitting stats.  They are, however, reflected in a 47 Home Runs stat, and in MPH off bat.

That would be two (2) pieces of evidence that Mark Trumbo is now a 40-homer man:  Sully's analysis, and Jerry Dipoto's.  Could be Yoenis Cespedes for a fraction of the price.  Let's get him, and ... what was the McCutchen price again?  HEH

....

NO EXTRA CHARGE

Can't find the interview now, but here's the guts of it.  Fangraphs guy asked Trumbo about his (non-existent) walks.  Trumbo replied very intelligently.  I'd love to be Miguel Cabrera, he said, and I have tried that many times.  It just doesn't work for me.  I've got to let the bat fly.  Ain't my choice.

Many sabermetricians assume that players are just too dumb to realize that First Base On Ball Four is a good thing.  Perhaps many sabermetricians are too dumb to realize when they're oversimplifying?

....

Mark Trumbo looked very, very embarrassed in left field for the M's.  Cindy and I were at one game where he made (2) botches that would have ruined a lesser man's will to compete.  Honestly wondered if it were the worst-fielded game I ever saw from a Mariner.   But last year he said this:

.

Mark TrumboBaltimore: “I see the ball better in right field. I think the spin is slightly easier to handle. In left field, for whatever reason, there are a lot of obscure plays that seem to happen. Teams might try to hide someone in left field, maybe their weakest defender, but I find — especially for a right-handed thrower — it can be quite difficult at times. Left-handed throwers might have a little bit easier time going toward the line. Right field just comes a lot easier for me.”

.

And in hindsight, that makes sense.  On some of those LF plays in Safeco, he looked like he could not SEE the ball.  :: shrug ::  Not saying he's good in RF; I doubt he is.  Probably would rather have Boomstick's glove in RF than Trumbo's.  But he looked prohibitive in LF, and he may not be such a clown in right.

Tank O'Neill might become Mark Trumbo.  Or, just perhaps, we might sign Tank O'Neill's best-case scenario to begin with.  I'm all for the owners putting the money on the field, as opposed to keeping it all.

Personally, I think with the glut of possibly ML-ready OF's in the organization that the M's would be better served by pursuing Chris Carter to bolster 1B depth.  His bat and Trumbo's look comparable, though Trumbo is obviously a tick better productivity-wise.  I just doubt that particular tick is worth the money difference, especially since we've already got Valencia in the fold and, limited though it may be, his defenseive stats in the OF aren't terrible according to Fangraphs.  He's almost a year younger than Trumbo and I have to imagine he'll come a whale of a lot cheaper.  Nelson Cruz I believed in before he signed his contract; Trumbo worries me in ways that Cruz never did.

That said, if 'Gar co-signed Trumbo as having made a legit change to his approach then I'd be moved over to the 'convinced' column.

I do love the flexibility required by JeDi to both 1) reverse a previous position on a player, and 2) pursue whatever paths to victory appear in spite of stated preferences.  Dogmatism is difficult to battle, no more so than when that dogmatism is of your own creation and maintenance.

He's so bad in the outfield, but a fine defender at first. My guess is that if they're signing Trumbo then Jerry's lookin to deal Vogelbach for a pitcher. The Rays need a first baseman don't they? Maybe a package around Vogs and a minor league arm for Odorizzi? Maybe Yarbrough and another lower guy, like Gaeda? Or maybe just Vogs and Neidert? Trumbo faded a bit down the stretch last year, but still slugged 470 in the second half. Plus you know he loves Edgar. And for some reason he was putrid against lefties last year? Weird but probably just noise. If they move Vogs for a pitcher than I'm all for it.

Nope,

Not a chance.

Don't need no Clevenger in the rear view mirror which is what they get if Trumbo doesn't rumble.

Trumbo seems Colorado bound, theough Cleveland has now popped as a possibility ... but Trumbo new hottie among F/A's.

This is misdirection by DePoet, whose option at his starting pitcher remains ahead of the caravan.

Boxcar full of young OF's so not mean they won't get a vet.

With Cubs getting David from KC, who the Nationals wanted, it means the Nats are layhing stone cold on the mat and their reality of MC Clutch for Robles now seems destined, unfortunately.

The GM has never had a problem saying he isn't perfect ... he just keeps the machete hacking through the undergrowth to find the treasure. And he keeps the machete sharp.

Agree that if the interest in Trumbo is real, there has to be something else going on.

Is something like this even legal?:

GM X: "I'm willing to give you your starter...but I need Trumbo."

JD: "Why don't you just sign him yourself?"

GM X: "I can't afford him."

JD: "OK, hw about I sign him for $15m per...then give him to you for my starter...and I'll throw in half his salary?"

GM X: "Deal."

I think this is more about Trumbo's agent trying to pump his value up than anything.

Agree with Mt.

LL has this from Greg Johns:  Dipoto says top position prospect Tyler O'Neill will get invite to Major League camp and likely will open year at Tacoma.

Likely open year in Tacoma.  But maybe not.  And reading between the lines, this all indicates that O'Neill is "likely" to get an early call....even if he's in Tacoma on opening day.  What do you think?  70% chance he's in Safeco by early June?

It's just about preserving the extra year of service time.  If that rule wasn't in effect he'd probably start the year in Seattle. As it is, we'll see him early June unless his train derails in the early going in AAA. I don't think they're gonna burn that "redshirt year" on a whim. He's looking at 8 weeks in Tac-town in which he needs to keep on hitting.

discussion from last year.  I'm in the same position of not seeing the fit for this older guy due to youth that we already have at positions he can play.   Defense is potentially more of a concern this time around, but I'll admit Lee fit in better than I expected.

Right now Cruz is so essential as the one strong RH bat in the MOTO.  If Cruz slips we may be in trouble.  Trumbo being here on an overlapping contract could also mean you're not scrambling after Nelson's contract is up.  But carrying both for 2 years simply for that reason seems strange.  If he can be fit in at 1b/DH/with limited RF...why was Valencia brought in?  Would you rather have Trumbo over him?  Over Smith?  I would say yes for sure over Smith, considering the rest of the roster.  Valencia could potentially coexist anyway, just need a shoehorn for that end of the roster again.

Still not convincing myself, but I tried.

Gee, I know a RH OF we might be able to sign.

Today chief nemesis on MCCLUTCH to the M's was the Nationals, who had the prospects to get him .... but dealt 3 of their top 6 prospects for Adam Eaton from the White Stockings.

One of those 3 was a Mr. Giolito (earlier reports said it was OF Robles) who the Pittsburghs wanted if they were to give up Mr. Mackclutch.

The dream is alive.

Admittedly, a starting pitcher comes first, and after long hesitation I am now jumping on one Mr. Archer of the "Don't Tampa Wit Me", and yesterday the Tampa's signed one of their biggest needs, a catcher, inking W. Ramos to a 2 year deal.

Biggest needs for the Rays now: an OF/DH, plus a reliever.

So, I'm saying goodbye to Vogelsbach, an OF (Gamel/Heredia?) and Gohara if they demand it.

Reyes in St. Lou appears to be staying there.

I'm getting tired of sounding like a one trick pony of this, but my vision could still prove to be 20/20. I think I brought MCClutch up a month ago.

Divish commenting on the social media frenzy after Bowden's Trumbo remarks: "It was amusing and it provided for some good jokes. The Mariners met with Trumbo's reps, but it was a due diligence meeting to understand what he's asking for and what his market is like."
