Now here's a tidbit

Z and Towers had a 6-for-1 deal close to consummation for Adrian Gonzalez last July 31, but it fell through when Towers was holding out for a 7th player!  Would be interesting to know who the six were, and who the 7th would have been.

The article makes it clear: no hometown discount.  Z and Towers go way back, so even though Towers is no longer with the Pods, I'm sure Z has a good sense of how likely it is that AG will get dealt and what it will take to get him.  (Which is certainly consistent with how indifferent Z was this winter with Branyan and Bay.)

IMO the M's 'defensive obsession' doesn't exist...  I think Z is just acquiring the best players he can afford while not gutting  the organization of talent.
This is an illustrative case in point.  6-for-1 for A Gone?  Sounds like Z has a very high esteem of the value of some legit offense. The fact that he wouldn't go 7-for-1 (and we don't know who the #7 was), that just tells you he'll only sacrifice so much for any one player.
Gonzales' value to the M's just diminishes with each passing day...  as the article indicates, he's going to want big money.  Sure if he leaves you get a couple draft picks, but still, I think the M's are more likely to pour money in to pitching.
