. GAME THREAD In case a coupla you mooks want to mosh each other off the TV screen. . BPJ SEZ  Hopefully Boogs' arrival means the end of the Dyson fulltime experiment. Heredia's .800+ OPS makes Dyson's extra bit of defense so unimpressive.  His most valuable role to the team would be pinch runner late in close games, then defensive sub. Getting to pick and choose the spots where you need a stolen base is exactly how I'd use my 25th roster spot (which is where Dyson fits in, imo). Sincere question, how many defensive plays will Dyson make that Heredia won't? Follow up: How many defensive plays... Read More

. PITCHER BATTER MATCHUPS Here are the backgrounds.  At BJOL there was an interesting statement last week, "All managers should always ignore all such data."  I hae me do'ots, but in this case nobody has seen anybody much yet.  Which favors the pitchers, whatever they tell you. Key thing for Miranda is always those two or three warning-track balls, and the 3rd time through the lineup.  See what approach he uses after they're used to his sneaky fastball and his change on the same tunnel. . This won't be a long thread. I get to make "money" off of Jeff Sullivan, who is awesome at stuff like this and did all of my work for me. . PREDICTABLE FAWNING Dept. Back when Paxton was leaning back too far, back when he was wild, he got hit around one game and he remarked "I've either got to spot my fastball or get a breaking pitch over.  One of the two."  He said that or something that amounts to exactly that.  The point was, nobody can get away with ONE weapon.  He needed two. ... Fast forward to nowadays... in the Shout Box during the first 2 hitters we ticked off 6 weapons, as opposed to two weapons.  The most nuclear of these is the fastball inner 1/3 to righties.  Paxton is distinctive here in that a Cliff Lee will... . Y'know the 1993-1998 Mariners would have held my attention even if they'd lost 95 games.  Which they didn't, but I'd have bought one ticket every 5th day just for the fireworks on display in that one. K-Pax' statline sits at 10.7 K, 1.8 BB and 0.0 HR.  Last time out, the A's showed that it's possible to score a few runs off Paxton if he can't hit the broad side of a barn door AND if the hitter lock in on mistake fastballs.  That isn't going to happen often.  We warned yer, after 3 shutouts, that there would be a few bad days.  Now, after the A's game, we warn the Tigers that it isn't likely... . GROK 1 Scott Servais first brought up the idea of Jean Segura 1, Mitch Haniger 2.  This was a delightful suggestion.  Shortly after, SABRMatt first brought up the idea of a freakish runs total for Mitch Haniger.  He is at 19 runs scored in 20 games, and Khris Davis has the next-best American League total at 14. Haniger is fast.  His OBP is .430 because he is sneaking up on people in front of our vaunted MOTO and because his fish rate is 19%.  Remember we used to not be able to decide whether Michael Saunders was a Runs guy or an OBP guy?  This is kinda like that, except good. . Malcontent (as well as his virtual reclamation project, HWMNBN) has well earned a couple of bows in the aftermath of Gallardo's shutout.  And he has more info-tainment for us: . For practically the first time in his career (The first time anywhere near this level since 2010!), Yovani Gallardo is throwing at the top of the zone aggressively with his 2 fastballs.  Similar things are true of his Slider.  His change-up is new and improved, with a higher level of aggression and confidence than previous seasons it seems.  He still isn't getting the bottom of the strike zone like I want, but he's... . IGNITION SWITCHES Several reports had it that the Mariners players didn't like the Leonydas offload, not one little bit.  But see where it leads.  A lot of times it is good to communicate your expectations.  Especially if those expectations do not involve 7-12 records. Speaking of which (W-L records), the M's are now +90 runs -85.  It also says the M's position players are #8 of 30 teams in WAR, #3 in the American League. So we get a thunderous win, a day off to bask in it.  Then we get Felix, throwing really quite well, followed by Zeus.  With Jean Segura joining the offensive festivities... Read More

. JOHN CLEESE "I APOLOGIZE UNRESERVEDLY DEPT." Whether Gallardo throws another game like this, is beside the point.  I definitely did not think him capable of this kind of performance.  Thrilled to see that he is. . THROWING DOWNHILL About the 2nd inning, Gallardo's fastball had you sort of blinking.  He was using a very high front side, glove in the release area, shoulders connected to the CF very well ... well, he's always come over the top, Tall and Fall rather than drive and drop.  But today he seemed to be throwing downhill, getting nice vertical bite. Happ had blue funk.  It is a disease that saps 100 percent of professionalism, manhood and ability out of its sufferers, and is fatal to a career.  The only cure is to trade or DFA the infected player.  Usually, as soon as the player takes off the Mariners jersey, he has a complete recovery.  Blue funk is mostly known to affect hitters, the most severe case being Kendrys Morales, but it can and does affect pitchers as well.  When a player is suspected of blue funk, it is important to quarantine him, usually via the 10 day DL, to make sure the infection doesn't spread... Danny Valencia isn't very good right now.  I'm sure you've noticed.  Danny Boy isn't, by the way, in some run-of-the-mill bad stretch. WBC-San Iwakuma's velocity had already been down his first two starts.  As a GENERAL RULE that means a robust gain to the ol' ERA number.  General rules are not absolutes and if anybody can pitch with a minus-minus fastball it's this guy. Then, in three pitches, the game went from 0-0 to 5-0.  The Rangers blinked several times in confusion, trying to process the surprise.  We noticed that James Paxton came out the next inning unafraid to throw strikes.  And we remembered how Lou Piniella used to juggle his rotation so that Randy... The 46% catch probability is based on Dyson's actual in-game positioning, as opposed to a Dewan-type stat which simply assigns every spot on the field a probability based on neutral positioning.  We assume that Dyson was better-than-average in his positioning.  Dewan also assumes that the TYPICAL MLB positioning gives a better chance at the catch than his system would expect.  In other words, teams do a great job in positioning their OF's to make catches like Dyson's. "Felix feels good, he went out and did his pregame work and felt perfectly good about it. It was a precautionary measure taking him out of last night's game, which I think was the right thing to do. "I was very encouraged with how he threw, and I believe he is as well. I thought he threw the ball great. Right now, we... Read More

. In the book of Ecclesiastes chapters 1-3, King Solomon (rich as Croesus, or Midas, or richer) has everything he could possibly have.  Wine, women, song, entertainment, riches, unsurpassable knowlege, all of it.  He sets out to investigate, methodically, which will make him happiest. He concludes, none will.  "I said of mirth, what doeth it?"  You go to the greatest standup routine of your life, and your good mood lasts until --- > somebody cuts off your parking spot at Wal-Mart.  Your beautiful wife is wonderful until she gets real mad at you.  A Ph.D in neuroscience is great until you... . GAMEFLOW Lance McCullers came out breathing Smaug-fire in the first three innings.  In fact Krueger compaed his curve to Nolan Ryank's mid high 80's curve, and against a located 94 MPH there's another three innings you're not going to do anyhing. Reminded you of the first 2 Mariners games ever played, where Nolan Ryan and Frank Tanana pole-axed the expansion M's by 2-0 and 7-0 or somesuch.  The M's won the third and my dad shrugged, "well, the Angels have two pichers." ... Iwakuma was on his game too, however, and he allowed only strange off-field HR.  After the first three innings, we had... Read More

. THE FABRIC OF BASEBALL HISTORY IS WRITTEN ON CY YOUNG CLOTH, Dept. There were a lot of things you liked about the M's 0-3 loss.  The only thing to dislike was that Dallas Keuchel was unhittable.  To turn a phrase against myself:  the AL West better hope that was just a 12-for-16 shooting night by square beard. It's one thing to have an invisible breaking pitch, like Keuchel's disappearing changeup.  Which was, I think, as good or better than Felix' changeup on his best day.  But it's another thing when your fastball location is ALSO nicking the black whenever you want. Jered Weaver used to... Read More

. SWEET LOU Coming from the Yankees, Lou used to grouse that the Mariners never "brought north the club they wanted to go to war with."  This year we're rolling.  With one notable roster exception, the M's are ready to throw hands.  No, the bullpen isn't a weakness in the broad sense; they've got a super-closer and some arms behind that.  It may not be the 1997 Orioles but it's not a weakness as such.  Now, if we're talking weaknesses: . HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED In his last TV start just now, threw like an MLB(TM) Innings Eater.  Granted, his strikeout total was 0.  Dr. D has grave doubts... Read More
