DVD/Blu-Ray Releases of the Week

Every week brings the release of some of your favorite films to the world of DVD and Blu-ray. As a courtesy to you, I’ve hunted down some of this week’s releases so that you can decide just how to stock your collection.

Strange Magic – This modern take on A Midsummer Night’s Dream brings a great cast and a soundtrack made up of pop songs to retell The Bard’s tale. See elves, goblins, fairies and more and they relate a series of comedic adventures.

M's Fitness = State of the Art

.

OKDan pointed out this YouTube which connects Dr. Elliott with P90X2.  I'm Tony Horton's biggest fan - here's a primer on the P90X / core strength topic.

.........

BeachBody, which manufactures P90X, Insanity, Body Beast, etc., is an oily parent company that borders on multi-level marketing.  BeachBody itself, I got no use for.

Tony Horton can't be happy about his association with them, but ... . I think he believes that it is a loud microphone from which he can attempt to influence people towards the right ideas.

Most people have a tendency to assume "one home DVD exercise program is as good as another" and that's a fair assumption until you look into it.  HAVING looked into it, I see Tony Horton (P90X) as the man who has revolutionized "functional fitness."  The fact that he brought in Marcus Elliott for P90X2 helps cement that.

Dr. Grumpy, who runs a medical center, sez,

.

People ask me all the time why EU countries appear to do better on some particular measure of medical performance. Or why they can afford to insure more of their population etc. I point out that the EU style medical systems simply could not exist in their current forms without the US. EU governments are able to spend so much on social programs because:

1. As Matt point out, the US taxpayer heavily subsidizes the security of the EU, something I think the EU has long taken for granted until recently when "stuff got real" with the Ukrainian crisis. The US tax payer essentially foots the bill for world stability, and the EU countries have been happy to allow us to do so (I don't blame them, they are only acting rationally). Sure, the US benefits from world stability also, but we pay for it.

Three books about Memorial Day

Every year on the last Monday of May, we dedicate a day to remember the men and women who have died in military service. For most people, Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer, and is traditionally celebrated by having a barbecue with friends or getting stuck in the car in a huge traffic jam trying to get out of the city. But it's worth taking time to think about Memorial Day's original purpose. Here are three remarkable books that explore the subject.

Civil war looms closer in Iraq

If recent events are any indicator, conflict in Iraq between the Shiite government and Sunni protestors is heating up to the point where civil war may be inevitable.  Just this last week there was a marked increase in terror attacks.  More than 77 were killed on Monday alone and the total of the week amounts to around 250, including two dozen government-aligned police officers.  Now the conflict is going even further, as the Sunni tribal leaders have stepped forward to demand that they be made into an autonomous region or the violence will continue.
