Most visitors to Australia like to spend time on the east coast. With destinations like Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns and Melbourne, there are plenty of places to see and plenty of things to do. Along with the notable cities, there are also more small beach towns, boasting beautiful coastal real estate than any lowly traveler could ever visit. While the Sunshine and Gold Coast are the preferred destination of most travelers, there are other beautiful places to visit outside of said stunning, coastal strips.
It isn't often that backpackers get to live the life of luxury. Sure they are traveling and not working. Sometimes a lucky few win the lotto with a loaded couch surfing host who takes you on the yacht.
Besides a few chance encounters with those from the upper class wanting to bestow the good life among those who live out of bags, most of us stay in smelly, loud dorm rooms. While this is typically the case, for those backpackers who make it to the Gold Coast of Australia, a stop in Surfer’s Paradise can open up your eyes.
Sometimes, a little bit of planning can go a long way while traveling. An early purchase of a flight, rental car, or hotel can save some cash, and having an itinerary can mean maximizing the fun. Having your days planned out, a compass (metaphorically) pointing north and a destination is something some people need. For many backpackers, and myself, the idea of making a plan beyond what you are doing in the now is absolutely ludicrous. Plans come and go, and normally, this is the result of finding great things to do along the way.
If you are a person who loves sunshine, coast and surfing, then the Gold Coast of Australia is a perfect place to visit. From Brisbane all the way down to Byron Bay, the coastline of eastern Australia is ripe with great beaches for ripping waves. While some are more secluded than others and some offer bigger waves than the rest, there is a little something for everyone all over the Gold Coast. For those of us, though, who like to just watch surfing while dazing out and dreaming about shooting out of a crashing pipe, one great place to visit is Coolangatta.
For those wanting to travel the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia, Brisbane is a pretty relevant jumping off point. Located almost in between the two coastlines, Brisbane is a vibrant, laid back city worth taking a look at. For the backpacking community, there are a ton of options, located all throughout the city. One option I don’t recommend is the Manly Harbour Backpackers Hostel in Manly Harbour.
