Two Excellent Places to Volunteer in NYC
In a recent Vlogbrothers video on YouTube, John Green announced the names of twenty charities that will be receiving donations from last year's Project for Awesome. Ultimate Peace, the Harry Potter Alliance, Doctors Without Borders and many more organizations are getting up to $25,000 each to help decrease what Nerdfighteria has cleverly dubbed “world suck” across the world.
The announcement got me thinking... While John and Hank Green are fighting for change on a global scale, what are we doing to decrease “community suck” here in NYC? If you're hoping to make a difference and don't know where to start, here are a couple of fabulous organizations right here in New York through which you can volunteer your time and positive energies.
Coalition for the Homeless
One of the city's most versatile and extensive advocacy organizations, Coalition for the Homeless provides everything from emergency meals to employment workshops for homeless and low-income individuals throughout NYC. Through them, you can volunteer for food and toy drives, shelter monitoring, and even their youth camp. For more information, click here.
Animal Haven
This mobile, non-profit animal shelter has worked for nearly fifty years to find loving homes for abandoned cats and dogs throughout the tri-state area. Volunteers with AH help out by feeding, bathing and grooming the animals (as well as their living quarters), improving their chances of adoption. For applications and further details, click here.
