Sunday News: George Zimmerman murders Trayvon Martin and goes free
Normally I don’t post news on Sundays—I love going as media-free as possible and instead do Artzooka projects with Wood Sprite. But today I have been working on several projects I’m behind on, and I was shocked to learn of two very sad stories today.
The first piece of news is more outrageous and rage-inducing than sad: George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida, has been released and found not guilty by a jury—at least half of whom, I have read, were mothers. Murder is legal in Florida, folks. I’m ashamed of our justice system and my heart goes out to Martin’s family and friends. Did you know that Marissa Alexander of Florida just got sentenced to 20 years in jail, by the way, for firing a warning shot at her husband who was threatening her? No priors, and this mother gets 20 years, while George Zimmerman walks—and she tried to use the same law that Zimmerman used. I guess it only applies to white men.
In sad news, actor Cory Monteith who played Finn on Glee died in Vancouver. Police found him in his hotel and there is no foul play suspected so far. He had been to rehab earlier for substance abuse problems. I hope parents with kids who are fans of the show can talk to them about the tragedy openly. I used to be a big fan for the first two seasons and harbored a crush on Monteith, who actually was a year older than I am. He will definitely be missed and my heart goes out to his family and friends as well.
