Ten Valentine Alternatives for Singles
So you don’t have a significant other to spend the big day with next week. Big deal. Here are ten other ways to spend the day that still commemorate the feelings of love that it was meant to represent without making you feel super single while doing them.
10. A Personal Health Day
Take the day off and relax for your mental health, or better yet, if you can, schedule yourself an annual checkup, dental cleaning, and eye exam to make sure you are, indeed, healthy.
9. Take Care of Your Own Heart
Forget boxes of chocolate (unless you want one—then by all means, have one) and take some time to care for another heart—your own! Eat some bananas, join a gym, or just take a walk at the rec center with a good friend.
8. Volunteer Somewhere
Share the love in an entirely different way by becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, spending some time at the local animal shelter, or helping to make your neighborhood park more beautiful by organizing a cleanup.
7. Love Your Parents
Spend the day with a parent or both of them, if you can. Go to the movies and have a delicious sit down meal somewhere as if you were really taking a date out. They will get a kick out of it and remember it for years to come. Many of our parents do not or cannot splurge on themselves, so if you can, why not?
6. Learn a New Skill
Take a fun cooking class or try a hand at some art at the local community college. Use Valentine’s Day to cultivate something new that you will love to do.
5. Love Your Siblings
If you and your siblings are single, spend the day out together watching movies, hitting different places to eat as if you were tapas bar diving in Spain, or even just window shopping. No single siblings? How about single friends?
4. Love Your Pets
If you work long hours and tend to neglect them, make sure you schedule some time in to love your pets with regular care, walks, and simple cuddle time. Make sure to make them an appointment at the vet’s if they are long overdue as well.
3. Give Some Love to Your Candidate
If you are into politics and you’ve always wanted to help out, choose your favorite candidate and hit the pavement, or do some phone banking. There is always room for another volunteer, no matter where you live.
2. Love Someone Who Loved You
Write a letter of thanks to someone who believed in you or who helped you that may not know how you feel, like an old teacher or mentor, or maybe even a boss.
1. Spend the Day Loving Yourself
Whether it’s a day at the spa, or simply time spent doing whatever you love most—from browsing book stores to playing video games—do something on Valentine’s Day just for you.
