The Battle Over NYC’s Graffiti - Art Form or Urban Decay?

If it’s one thing that’s familiar to everyone in NYC (and pretty much every other urban center on the planet) it’s graffiti. This urban expression has become so prolific that the Museum of the City of New York even opened an exhibit that highlighted graffiti. But some are complaining that graffiti is not art at all, but simply a form of urban decay.

I know more than a few artists that would argue against that viewpoint. And if you’ve ever seen some of the better graffiti artists’ works, then you know that a lot of time, effort and skill goes into making them. It sounds to me like a bunch of overprivileged rich folks just don’t understand what graffiti truly is. Vandalism it may be, but it’s still art and it still represents the creative expression of an entire culture.
