NYC Takes to the Streets to Protest Police Brutality

In yet another show of dissatisfaction over the way the police are abusing their power (and other people), the folks of New York took to the streets and protested this week. Of course, these things never seem to work out the way they’re planned and the end result was that about three dozen people ended up being arrested. Mostly this was because they jumped into the road and disrupted traffic, though there were a couple of cases of police being assaulted.

It’s hard to say whether or not these protests are having any sort of effect, particularly when they end up tainted with violence. The entire point is to protest violence, so when things turn ugly, the movement loses some of its credibility. Something certainly needs to be done about police who choose to abuse their powers, but in the end it is up to us to set the example even as we point out the flaws in the system.
