EA to shutter four free-to-play games

F2P not paying off like they had hoped

Free-to-play is a common buzzword in gaming these days, but despite all the hype, EA recently announced they would be shutting down four of their free-to-play titles.

Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free, Need for Speed World, and FIFA World are all going to be closed in mid-July. EA cited the main reason as being lack of player participation and interest. Although free-to-play games are popular on mobile platforms, apparently they are not doing as well in PC land.

One exception is Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is spared the axe because it still has "a very enthusiastic and growing player community."
