Take Action Tuesday: Child marriage and gentle parenting
Here are a few important issues that you can take action on right now. Pick any that you feel strongly about and share your opinion or use the link provided to add your voice.
Stop child marriage in Sudan: I know the thought of my own child getting married someday, though mostly bittersweet, makes me cringe at her young age. I want her to be young and playing with me forever, as a lot of parents do! I taught Romany children in Spain during college and met some lovely young women who were little more than brood mares to many of their family members; their education simply wasn't considered important. The fact that some girls as young as 12 are married around the world—and in countries like Sudan, nearly half of the girls under age 19 are married—just boggles my mind. Please visit Care2.com to learn more or to sign the petition against child marriage.
Become a gentle parent: This lovely guide to gentle parenting is a must-read for parents who want to be calmer, more peaceful and stop yelling. And who wouldn't want some of that? I’m a huge fan of parenting advice that’s not about changing your child or “getting” your child to behave, but about changing yourself and how you parent. I know it’s not a petition, but I really do believe the biggest differences we can make happen when we change ourselves.
Consent in sex ed: Even though my family doesn't participate in public school, we still have an interest in making it the best it can be while people use it—and I think this idea is absolutely needed today. It’s a petition to make the concept of consent a part of sex education, as well as to make being an ally and dismantling rape culture a part of curriculum.
