Makes this a sweetheart deal. It's just a 5 year extension of his last contract, basically. 5/135 is beautiful.
As Doc said in the Aircraft Carrier thread, a Felix with less velocity is what we saw to start last season, and he was awesome. If he goes the way of Johan Santana (another possible pitcher of the decade candidate) and injures his arm? Well Santana had a blip where we didn't throw 200 innings, then lost a year and a half to injury, but sandwiched around that... he's been the same Santana. And if we keep having this much depth in pitching prospects, we can find a way to work around some random nick to the King.
Felix, for as long as he can throw, seems like he should throw about like this. He's crazily consistent, a total horse, and with as many plus pitches as he has he doesn't stress velocity nearly as much as some do. He watched Moyer be effective throwing 85, maybe that's it - velocity alone doesn't make a pitcher.
And Felix is a whale of a pitcher, who is now our pitcher instead of wearing pinstripes in 2014. That alone is worth cheering for. We're doing with him what we didn't do with Randy, and I can't find it in my heart to argue one whit against it. I liked Randy more as a pitcher (and Moyer, for that matter), but Felix is a version of some combination of BOTH, and his is the only jersey I actually own.
I'm glad he's ours for the rest of the decade, come what may. Which hopefully will be a World Series appearance or two.
