Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for August 5

Marte's amazing run of hits continues ... D.J., Dario, Corey go deep ... and Bantz ... etc.

News:

  • Well-reported elsewhere by now, but Carter Capps was recalled to the Big Club to take the place of Tom Wilhelmsen, who will try to regain his form in Tacoma.
  • [Pre-publication update: since I didn't finish this morning, now I see that Wilhelmsen has, in fact, already pitched for Tacoma in an afternoon game.  More on that tomorrow.]
  • If you've been watching the box scores, you may have noticed that Chance Ruffin (Watch List), who was making a reliever-to-starter conversion at Jackson, has been used out of the bullpen his last four appearances.
  • It's the All-Star break for Everett, but actually a big chunk of the team will be on the all-star squad, including the coaching staff.  Seven Aqua Sox are all-stars, and D.J. Peterson was named as well, but was promoted to Clinton.  The game is in Everett tonight (Tuesday).

AAA -- Tacoma 6, Iowa 5  -- Box

Walk-off solo homer for one-time unlikely Mariner Brandon Bantz ended the game.  He had singled earlier.

Ty Kelly had two hits and a steal.

Blake Beavan slogged along well enough to keep the game close: 6.2 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.

Low-A -- Clinton 12, Kane County 4 -- Box

The LumberKings pulled away behind homers from the aforementioned Deeeeeej! and from Dario Pizzano (26intheMix).

That's four homers in just 11 LumberGames for Peterson, and 10 overall in 40 professional outings.  He's slugging .539.  [For reference, last year, after 40 games, Mike Zunino (Talk40 #1) had 13 homers and was slugging .720; and he was already in AA.]

It was Pizzano's sixth homer.  He's hitting .301/.387/.448.  [That .147 ISO is still a concern, Moe.]

And Ketel Marte (26intheMix) keeps hitting: three more singles.

It's certainly a run of good fortune for the switch-hitting teen shortstop, but my goodness -- since July 30:

  • 7 games
  • 36 plate appearances
  • 21 hits!
  • 4 walks
  • 1 strikeout!
  • .626/.694/.781
  • BABIP .677

David Holman (Watch List) started for only the second time, but it was a solid one: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

AZL Rookie -- A's 4, Mariners 3 -- Box

Here's a cruddy way to lose.  Break a 1-1 tie with two in the top of the 9th, and then give up three in the bottom of the 9th.  And to the A's.

Those two runs in the 9th came from the bat of Corey Simpson, the teen Texan who's been struggling so far, but delivered his second homer (a two-run shot) before watching the bullpen lose the lead.

Previously, it was a decent start for Ugueth Urbina (the younger) (Watch List): 5.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

Looking at Tuesday

Wilhelmsen already pitched by the time I finish this (2.0 IP, 3 ER) before turning over to James Paxton (Talk40 #3).

Emerging Jose Flores is set for Pulaski.
