doesn't want to play the patsy to the pressures of rival GM's. That was pretty much the core idea in his remarks. These players are "our property!" Well, the definition of a trade is when you, um, trade YOUR property for someone ELSE's property. Still, even though I'm hard on Jack, it's possible the only offers he turned down were ridiculous. If so, he has no one to blame but himself and his bosses, who have failed to earn the respect of their peers. I don't believe it's strictly geography that accounts for the Mariners' reputation as irrelevant. It's partly true, but in the end it's just an excuse. It's the M's own behavior that have entrenched this idea in the minds of baseball opinion makers.
The Seahawks were irrelevant until Mike Holmgren brought with him some instant credibility, then Pete Carroll, coming with no credibility at all, EARNED what the Seattle Seahawks now have by rolling up his sleeves and getting some WORK done, lifting the franchise to undreamed heights in just a few years.
