News This Week: Police shoot and kill 13-year-old
A teen boy of color was shot and killed by police when he was walking around with a toy assault rifle. The 13-year-old child was out playing and did not hide from anyone, and when police told him to drop his weapon there are apparently conflicting stories about what happened. The boy may have simply been turning to see who was yelling at him, and the police officer who shot him argues that he was approaching him without dropping the gun. Liss from Shakesville discusses this heinousness much better than I could.
I am going to miss my Jelly Belly jelly beans. I just found out that the company chair gave $5,000 to a campaign in California to stop a law that respects trans students. You can argue that supporting a company doesn’t support the person who is in charge of it, but I don’t buy it. And I won’t buy Jelly Belly candy anymore, either.\
Students in Brazil have created a board game to help students learn about and fight human trafficking. This is really inspiring. I remember being so shocked and so angry whenever I discovered that not only does slavery still exist, but that it is thriving as one of the top industries on Earth. In school, we were taught that it ended with the Civil War, period, in our typical Western-centric textbooks and lectures. I’m really glad to see that it’s being covered in some schools today.
And this story about a woman whose entire life was turned upside-down when she was simply honest with her doctor is absolutely shameful.
