Yankees Never Silent...Make Blockbuster Trade

This just in, all the talk of the Yankees not being in a rush to make moves has turned out to be a fib.  At least if the deal being discussed around the web is made official.  They've finally plugged the gaping maw that was screwing up their whole outfield defense - CF.

The Particulars of the Trade

For the Yankees:

  • Curtis Granderson (CF) IN
  • Ian Kennedy (SP)
  • Phil Coke (RP)
  • Austin Jackson (CF) OUT

For the Diamondbacks:

  • Edwin Jackson (SP)
  • Ian Kennedy (SP) IN
  • Max Scherzer (SP)
  • Daniel Schlereth (RP) OUT

For the Tigers:

  • Austin Jackson (CF)
  • Phil Coke (RP)
  • Max Scherzer (SP)
  • Daniel Schlereth (RP) IN
  • Edwin Jackson (SP)
  • Curtis Granderson (CF) OUT

Yowza!

The Yankees had enough payroll room to add a big contract and a HUGE need for a legitimate CFer.  This makes Melky Cabrera expendible and he's probably going to get traded elsewhere for a relief pitcher or BOR starter.

The Diamondbacks side of this deal makes little sense to me.  I'd personally rather have Scherzer than Jackson.  But I guess they wanted to lock in their TOR starter since they're about to lose Webb.

The Tigers get lots of super-young fairly talented prospects who are either not yet in the bigs or in their first or second full seasons.  Jackson hit very well in AAA in 2009 and plays a solid CF, but does not project to be a star, really.  Coke is a serviceable LH reliever, Scherzer steps immediately into their rotation and Schlereth is an interest project with HORRIBLE mechanics and command.  It also frees the Tigers up to address other needs in FA if they can find a fit or two at low cost...especially if they could somehow unload a bad contract (Willis, for example).

This takes Jackson and Granderson off the board for the Ms, unfortunately...but the good news is...Granderson didn't go the Angels, the early favorite to land him.

The rich get richer. Granderson is going to go bonkers in NY with his newfound FB approach.
I guess we'll never know if Morrow+Kelley for Jackson was really an option..but its looking like a lost opportunity right now.

Forget Jackson I would've wanted Scherzer in this particular deal.
(Easy on the vulgarity, please - admin)

Sorry about that I'm still angry that the D'Backs parted with Scherzer when he's better/cheaper/under more years of control than Edwin Jackson

... and ya, Taro, I think you and I were the only two shooting around that corner.
The Boras Factor muddied the water, but Detroit definitely got back the blue-chippers that the local consensus said Jackson was not worth.
That ball goes in the goal for us... score Tar-Ecto 64, opponents 58 ...

I'm thinking the D-back's part of the trade must of been pushed by pleas from its local sports announcers and papers.
I mean, Scherzer and Schlereth ... your radio broadcasts are going to sound like they're coming from Mayberry's Otis.

Scherzer is like Morrow mechanically with a worse followthrough. Hes a great talent, but I don't expect him to stay healthy.

Morrow+Kelley is certainly less than what they actually received.. Although I guess we can't know for sure if that deal was really on the table.

I think what killed the Mariner deal is that they wanted a CFer and we didn't have one to give.  Austin Jackson is MLB ready and probably better than Mike Saunders.

Ya, but they also gave up Granderson for that return (and I'm not sure if A.Jack is significantly better than Saunders). Granderson is a more valuable asset than Jackson even, considering his contract.
It looks like we'll never really know what was going on.

Now they have
Dan Haren
Brandon Web
Edwin Jackson
Ian Kennedy
Aaron Heilman? Bryan Augenstein? Kevin Mulvey?
It's a pretty formidable rotation.

And then they have Clay Zavada in the bullpen.
And all position's covered...

Looks like dbacks could go far in 2k10.
