NFL Fantasy League, boys?

It was interesting to see that Sandy, SABRMatt, Grizzle and Cool Papa, among others, are football-downloaded.  :- )  In that case, how many of you weaklings would be up for a football fantasy league?

.................

Played one NFL fantasy league.  Long enough ago that Terrell Davis was as no-brainer at #1 as, say, that Viking running back is nowadays.

Signed up for a random public league, got slotted at the #1 overall (which is always a big thrill), and of course grabbed TD.  At the end of the second, Steve Young was miraculously still available, so grabbed him... slap me silly.  My first NFL fantasy league and ten minutes in, I'm guaranteed a championship.

That was the year that TD and Steve Young suffered catastrophic injuries like in weeks 1-2...

Since then we've deduced that depth is a bit more of an issue on a football fantasy roster than it is in baseball.  Well, unless your baseball roster includes a bunch of imports from the NL Central, of course.

.................

Seattle Sports Insider comes up like #10 on a Google search for "Seattle Sports," kind of cool considering that it was launched like twelve days ago :- ) and is networked into some football sites already...

12-second highway scan:  SSI to include (1) a variety of contributors on the front page, plus (2) Seahawks, Huskies, Sounders and other stuff, with the Mariners the pivot pole around which the community revolves...

Got to keep the important things in life first, but still, after you've taken 26 Caribbean cruises, one to the Mediterranean isn't a bad change of pace...

.................

Cool Papa's last post, a month or two ago, drew tremendous traffic and Matty's stuff is popular too... we encourage front-page posts by anybody who feels their material is strong enough ... if you'd dare to launch an MC thread, you can dare to launch an SSI article...

Throughout the offseason, Dr. D will (likely) continue to firehose far more Mariners stuff than anybody wants, needs or ever axed for ... but Seahawk brownie bits will be mixed into the Vanilla Bean while they're rollin'.

As a general principle, Dr. D will try to have a Mariners article published alongside, on any particular day that he has a Seahawks article up ... so the M's-only amigos need not fear infomercial-saturation when clicking over to wallow in Doug Fister's latest heroic exploits... scroll past the Aaron Curry pics if the M's 1-9 rotation depth chart is what is on your mind...

.................

So.

Who is going to commish a football league?   And are enough volunteers going to sound off, that we can get a giant 16-team cage match going alongside-or-with the standard 10- or 12-teamer?

Yahoo has a fairly robust free site, with pre-ranked position slots and yadda yadda.  But if any of you guys are actually good at football, you've gotta know of a free site that's better?

I'm clear this Saturday for a draft.  Or next.   Or every day until the first bye week.  Bring it.

Cheers,

Dr D

...my football knowledge is more NCAA, less NFL. :)
I'm a Penn State fan first, on the football front, that is.
I can outlift any of you pokeys when the subject turns to Division III Hockey...not that many of you care. LOL
In any event, the NFL isn't my strongsuit.

Joe Paterno was a legend when *I* was a kid, late 1970's.  That guy has got to be literally 75, 78 years old now, right?  Is he still good, or riding his system at this point?

What is this you speak of?

I have no idea... that's why it's fun to offer my opinions...

There was talk of Paterno losing his touch when I went to PSU, but it was all excuses for a bad couple of rounds of recruiting.  His play-calling is sometimes a bit predictable because he always...always...ALWAYS...plays to his strengths, not to the scouting report of the other team (I mean he'll try to use the strengths he has that are a good match for the opponent, but he's not going to call 40 passes against a weak pass defense if his QB isn't very good), and he has a playbook that hasn't changed all that much in 40 years.  But he's still very good at directing the attention of his players and getting the most out of what he has.  Penn State's football program isn't actually all that strong anymore...it's important to understand that.  What strenght it has comes entirely from Paterno...they're getting CLOBBERED by southern party schools for attracting the hottest high school prospects these days...they have to draw from athletes who are actually motivated academically and guys who think they can ride PSU to the NFL.  The fact that he's still winning a lot of games is a testament to his coaching skill.

... (no running game at all) -- ba-duhm-pum
Seriously, I've played 2 years in Fantasy Football, (I took over a team who had keepers of Peyton Manning and Priest Holmes (2003 season).  I set a total points record that year that STILL stands.  I also drafted a team from scratch (drafting 12th of 12), and finished dead last.
But, I'm nowhere close to "up" on the NFL these days to even pretend to be capable of making even a nominal effort at competitiveness, (and don't have the time, either).

TOTALLY be up for a Fatasy Football league!

I agree that yahoo probably has the best fantasy site on the web.  I am in a couple of PAY league who pale in comparison to yahoo.

Keep the football content coming.  Baseball is just what I dink around with waiting for football season to come back around :)

Are you a commish type?  :- )
Think you could round us up 8 more guys?  Maybe Lonnie would allow us to post an ad for the league at MC...

9

I would go, but I'm not sure how to make a time commitment to a draft.  My son and I rode late-round snags Michael Turner and Matt Forte to our extended-family league title last year.

Ok I set up a standard Yahoo league here: http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/943451

I made it auotpick for simplicity, so we don't have to try and set up a live draft in the next few hours :)  It is probably already to late to get the league filled for tonights game, and therefore this week, but I will set the draft satus for ready a day or two before next weeks games, so we can just start in week 2.  Hopefully the league fills up :)  I will go post this on MC as well.

But are we going to have an option for live draft?
Next Saturday the 19th would be fine to start scoring in week 3.  Does that work?   Autodrafted teams aren't an option for me.

OK...
So I made a live draft league as well, default scoring, ten teams, everything the same as the league above except a live draft.
Here is the info:
URL to join: http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/register/joinprivateleague_le...
League ID: 945130
password: goms
live draft, September 19, 7:00 pm PDT
Feel free to stay in just the auto draft league or join both or just the live draft one, if they both fill up we will just play both, if only one fills up we will just delete the one that doesn't, and if neither fills up then I guess we can just try again next year ;)

Gotta love free stuff on the internet :)
