The Draft Countdown Begins
Who will it be?

Fans of the Seattle Storm, you have exactly one month now to find out who the team will select for their number one draft pick this April. The Storm Facebook page is hopping with speculation and excitement as fans predict who will be selected next. There is also a fun photo recap of the previous first draft picks made by the Storm over the last few years.

Back in 2001, the selection was Lauren Jackson. Jackson was a three-time MVP. In 2002, the number one draft pick was Sue Bird, a nine-time All-Star. We also know of her as an Olympic champion, winner of the gold as well as one of Seattle’s most beloved athletes who cites the fans as her number one reason for staying with the Storm this long—longer than most athletes remain with their draft teams. Last season, in 2015, Jewell Loyd was selected and is now not only the Rookie of the Year but also signed on with Nike for a huge merchandise deal. Suffice to say that the Storm usually picks pretty well when they have a shot at the number one pick during the WNBA draft season. The only question is, who will it be this year?

Most fans agree that Breanna Stewart is the top choice for the year. Even Seattle Storm Head Coach Jenny Boucek seems to think so as she has given “Stewie” lots of attention during her senior year at UConn. Some fans, however, think that the choice may land the Storm elsewhere. Fans are asking for Jillian Alleyne to be selected, for example. Allenyne, a Sunkist League MVP, McDonald’s All-American nominee, Inland Valley Player of the Year and Pac-12 Player of the Year, is not one to overlook. She has averaged almost 20 points per game and could give the Storm the youthful edge that they seek during the draft. Even so, with Stewie virtually undefeated and fans adding “Draft Stewie!” signs to their lawns to encourage her selection, she does seem an almost sure pick for the April draft.

If you recall, other major contenders this season include Moriah Jefferson, Ruth Hamblin, Tiffany Mitchell, Morgan Tuck and Courtney Williams. Every player being considered this year is really such an amazing athlete that any of them would make an excellent addition to the team. We will find out in April, but until then, what are your best guesses as to who the Storm will choose?
