T-Birds Lose to Rockets
A 5-2 loss broke their six-game streak

Although we were celebrating another six-game winning streak just last week, it was broken on Wednesday night. When the Seattle Thunderbirds took on the Kelowna Rockets at the Prospera Place in Kelowna, British Columbia, they lost with a score of 5-2 in favor of the Rockets.

At first, it looked like things were going to go the Thunderbirds’ way. The Birds were on top 15-7, outshooting the Rockets in the first period. Then Lind, assisted by Linaker and Merkley, scored the first goal of the night for the Rockets. The Birds tied the game up with the second goal of the night when Neuls scored, assisted by Khaira and Eansor, but the Rockets came back and took the lead with the third goal when Borstmayer, assisted by Smart, made a goal.

Penalties in the first period were had between D. Gatenby and Kel for hooking, Holowko and Sea for interference, Thurkauf and Kel for double minor boarding, Kolesar and Sea for holding and Barzal and Sea for tripping. Miraculously, no penalties were given out during the second period.

Lind scored again during the third period, assisted by Linaker and Smart, for the fourth goal of the night. The Rockets also scored the fifth goal when Merkley, assisted by Thurkauf, scored another. The sixth goal, scored by Soustal and assisted by Kirkland and Baillie, also belonged to the Rockets. Holowko, assisted by Neuls, was able to score the night’s last goal, putting up another for the T-Birds, but by then it was too late.

In the third period, penalties were given between Ballhorn and Kel for tripping. Flodell saved 28 out of 33 shots and Whistle saved 27 out of 29 for the Rockets. Perhaps if the Birds had only made a few more shots… Games on the road always have their risks, but the Birds had just won four out of the previous six away games. That very afternoon, ratings were posted and the Rockets were ranked at number four, whereas the T-Birds took number six.

Bret Iverson was the ref on Wednesday night. Linesman included Dustin Minty and Kevin Crowell. Tomorrow night the Birds will be back in their home territory at the ShoWare Center, playing against the Vancouver Giants. If you want to cheer them on in person and help start up another six-game streak, be sure to get tickets. The puck drops at 7:35. Can’t make it to see Friday’s game? They’ll be playing the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night, too.
