T-Birds Beat Americans
Final score was 4-2

Jumping back from their narrow loss to the Everett Silvertips, the Seattle Thunderbirds beat the Tri-City Americans on Friday night with the final score of 4-2. The Birds now stand at 34-23-3-0, which is better than they were last week but still five points behind Everett in division rankings. One of two things can happen now when it comes to the cup: the Birds will lose again to the Tips, or they will hopefully build up such a heated rivalry from this season that when they do win, it will be cause for fireworks and bubbly for fans all across the Northeastern seaboard. Let’s hope it’s the latter.

On to the recap: Cavin Leth made the first goal of the evening with a wrist shot, making it his 11th of the season. Andreas Schumacher and Jared Hauf had the assists on the night’s first goal. The score was 2-0 when Nolan Volcan scored the second goal of the evening with another wrist shot, still in the first period. Ryan Gropp brought the score up to 3-0 at the end of the first period. Matthew Barzal and Jerrett Smith had the assists. The Birds were playing so strongly that the Americans ended up trading out goalies but it didn’t help the team as much as they would have liked.

The Americans scored during the second period when Nolan Yaremko made a goal and Parker Wotherspoon had the assist. The team scored again, but Michael Rasmussen’s goal was their final for the evening. Morgan Geekie and Brandon Carlo had the assists. During the third period, Mathew Barzal scored the final goal of the night. Nick Holowko and Smith made the assists on the last goal of the night.

Landon Bow had a great night, with 27 saves on 29 shots, making his record 17-20-4-0. Fans are still pretty ambivalent about Bow, who replaced Taz just months ago, but he does play a strong game when he is confident on the ice. It was nice to see him lead a strong defense after so many great games with Flodell at the net.

Next the Birds will be up against the Silvertips again at the ShoWare Center on Saturday. The game will start at 6:05 to account for Hockey Challenge 2016, which will benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington and Alaska. It will be a great game to see and the Birds definitely need some fan support to finally beat those Tips.
