Sue Bird Returns
WNBA’s top player is back with the Storm

Fans have been waiting with bated breath to find out whether or not the most decorated player in the entire WNBA will be returning to Seattle this season. Sue Bird, of course, thinks there was never anything to worry about. “I’m definitely going to finish my career in Seattle,” Bird said. “When is the actual end date? I don’t know.” The Storm announced on the team’s Facebook page that Bird said, “Seattle is my home.”

Seattle Storm General Manager and President Alisha Valavanis says that “Sue’s commitment to this team and to the city of Seattle is unprecedented.” She went on to express her gratitude toward Bird for staying with the team, saying that it’s rare for a professional athlete to stick around with a single franchise for her or his entire career and that what Bird is doing is pretty special. Seattle Storm Head Coach Jenny Boucek also praised Bird, saying that she is the best point guard to ever play in the franchise. Boucek also points out that although Bird has the records and skills, she also has the character of a true professional athlete. “She is one of the best leaders, teammates and competitors to play any sport on any level.” Fans took to the team’s Facebook page to tell Bird how much they love her and appreciate her staying as well.

Bird was the first overall draft pick in 2002 as well as a two-time NBA champion. She has three Olympic gold medals and is in the running for the 2016 USA Women’s Basketball Team this year. If she is selected, she will compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Seattle Storm player and Rookie of the Year Jewell Loyd is also competing for a spot on the team.

Bird holds a number of records in the WNBA, including being the first player in the history of the franchise to reach 5,000 points as well as 2,000 assists. She has started in every game that she has played in, which includes 413 WNBA games. In the entire WNBA, she ranks second in overall assists and 11th in points earned. Bird says that Seattle is a supportive city and she looks forward to working hard this season with her teammates. One of her most famous accomplishments was leading the Storm to an unprecedented seven game winning streak during the 2010 WNBA Championship.
