Belgium-Spain friendly canceled amid terrorist threats
Belgian government advised to not play today

The international friendly between Belgium and Spain scheduled for Tuesday has been called off at the last second due to concerns over a terrorist attack, according to several media reports.

Belgian government recommended Monday to the Belgian FA that the game not take place, with the FA heeding their advice.

French authorities have identified a 27-year-old Belgian as the mastermind of the Paris attacks on Friday. His current whereabouts are unknown. A major police operation took place in the Brussels neighborhood of Molenbeek on Monday, although it failed to yield any arrests related to the attacks.

Both the Spanish and Belgian teams expressed their regret in not being able to play the match in Brussels, with the Spanish team already in the city. Yet both sides respected the decision.

In the aftermath of the attacks many in Spain are weary of the upcoming match between rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona, as it is arguably the biggest club football match in the world.

Especially freightening is that the France-Germany friendly held at the Stade de France was a target in the ISIS attacks. Thankfully security forces thwarted the bomber and he was not able to detonate the bomb inside the stadium.

Locals in Madrid with tickets for the match have expressed safety concerns, but have faith in law enforcement to adequately protect match goers.

"Security in stadiums works well, the risk is more in the streets, in spontaneous gatherings,” said Jacques Lambert, the organizer of the upcoming Eurocup, which France is scheduled to host this summer.

Lambert’s comments come on French radio station RTL when asked if he thought that the tournament should be postponed in light of the attacks.

"Wondering whether Euro 2016 must be cancelled is playing the game of the terrorists," Lambert said.
