Miranda vs Meyer, sans Mike Trout
couldn't find a Heredia meme, sorry

.

If the M's could take the 2nd Angel game, they're 13-16 and then would need only a split leading up to the Paxton win.  A record of 15-17 would beat a lot of records, say, 2-8.  Here is the matchup:  Mike Trout is being rested, which against a journeyman wild LHP feels like at least a run or two.

...

The Mariners' sparkling outfield defense was the difference in Wednesday's game.  The stolen home run by Guillermo Heredia is being sold as "the catch of the year," and that meant the M's OF defense changed a loss to a win.  But he's made quite a few nifty snags in left.

Fangraphs has Heredia at +1.8 runs and +0.4 WAR in sixteen games.  Let's see, times ten ... :: counts on fingers :: has him on pace for +18 runs saved and 4.0 WAR in mostly left field.  That's a reasonably solid contribution from a role player.  Also, he's hitting .286 with solid walks, solid power and ... the legs haven't shown up yet, are actually a minus to his WAR, but we know where those are at.

...

Ben Gamel's body language ... it's beyond "comfortable."  It's beyond "loose."  When he steps into the box, or even when he's got two strikes on him, he vibes like --- > a restaurant manager surveying the floor with absolutely everything going right, customers ordering desserts, bussies taking fresh bar towels to everything.  I just totally dig his vibe.

Also he's got a 139 OPS+ based on a strange knack for zinging line-drive doubles into soft areas of the outfield.  He hit a 3-iron that ticked off Mike Trout's glove deep ... Trout was disoriented by the sizzle on the ball.  Gamel will one-arm a ball down the line short, and then scramble into 2B before the fielder gets there.  I've got my eye on these "soft doubles" for Ben Gamel.

He has fanned a fair bit, in his first week-plus, but all the component stats are great.  Very low fish rate.  Low whiff rate.  Just a real low swing rate.  Like Mitch Haniger, like John Olerud, he seems okay with called strikes.  Another very cool attribute.

In an ideal world, Guillermo Heredia and Ben Gamel would BOTH be role players for us, and what role players they might turn out to be.

...

Emilio Pagan got lit up on Wednesday night.  He was throwing a 92-94 fastball with excellent life but -- I thought at a glance -- a very "seeable" arc without the right movement.  He's supposed to have nice arm action on a -10 MPH slider and he flashed that too.

Ah, well, every young pitcher gets lit up.  The good ones don't let it get to them.

...

Greg Johns makes an argument that Danny Valencia will slug .484 from here to the wire.  Well, kinda.  It's cool that he turned out to be a quality defensive first baseman.  Check Johns' argument.

...

Ariel Miranda is a perfectly reasonable #6 starting pitcher.  He's got his K's over 8, his walks in the 2's, and his ERA at 3.81.  But his 89% strand rate is the highest I ever remember seeing ...

MORE, not less, it is turning out that Miranda's starts pivot with those three warning-track balls.  10 feet short or 10 feet long.  Well, they've got the three center fielders out there again.

.

Cheers,

Dr D

Above in the game comments, Matt mentions that Thursday's game illustrated how Dipoto's ideal offense works.

I think it should also be added that Miranda, with the help of the 3 CF's in the OF and solid infield defense performed just as Dipoto had designed as well.

Lastly, the last 3 M's GM's all at one time talked about and usually acquired a solid left handed pitcher who has fly ball tendencies because that type of pitcher is perfect for Safeco... and that has been true about Miranda for most of this year.

3

...I think he is not merely a "fine sixth starter"...I think he's a fine fourth starter. Erratic, perhaps, but not prone to long stretches of futility. It's not like his homer rate is 1.6

4

And say there's a decent chance of him being a fine 3rd down the road.  Obviously there's some non-zero chance of more but I've used up my crazypants predictions for the year.

5

Have been saying since last year that Miranda was absolutely a very nice rotational regular, not just a plug in.  Over his last 10 starts, going back to Sept. of last season, he's gone at least 5 innings with 2 ER or less seven times.  In his last 10 starts, Kuma has only done that 5 times.  3 times Miranda has given up no earned runs, Kuma only once.

6

Even with Darvish on the hill tonight, it's about time we see Motter again.  Heredia to CF?

8

That Heredia is the better defender at this point.  I'd think it might be partially aging/decline of speed except Dyson is still one of the best at swiping a bag.  Heredia could definitely use some of that knowledge.

It is possible that it's at least partially SSS in the difference in stats but I'm seeing it as well.

Interesting Factoid: Four of the top five teams in the AL in batters HBP are from the AL West.

Leading the way is Seattle with 17, then Houston with 15, then LAA with 14 (along with the White Sox), then Texas with 12. NO OTHER TEAMS ARE IN DOUBLE DIGITS. The next seven teams have either 9 or 8. The outlier in the West is Oakland with 5.

Don't know quite what conclusion to draw from this, but it's dadgum interesting.

11

with baseballs to the body since they can't beat anyone at baseball.  Just kidding.   Something interesting anyway although by July or August it might already be shown that it was just random.

12

It's already a career high, maybe opposing teams are trying to slow him down?  The Mariners also added Chooch! proffesional HBP'er, he and Mikey Z have always used HBPs to enhance their on base game.  The Angels added Danny Espinoza (Hit 20 times last season in 601 PA) and Martin Maldonado (15 times in his last 587 PA).  I think there's some fluke to it, but boy is that wild.

13

Haven't watched a single Yankees game, but...cm'ON, MAN!! 124 OPS+ and 119 ERA+.

Aaron Judge is playing like the next Barry Bonds, and Chase Headley is hitting like a vintage Derek Jeter. And the Yankees' top bullpenners are sporting ERA+'s of 694, 505, 474, and 284.

Yeah it's early, and all those numbers will gravitate towards the mean, but ya gotta be KIDDIN' me!

14

Throw away one guy with 3 ABs and the Astros' ENTIRE roster sports just two players with sub-100 OPS+'s. One them is, um, Carlos Beltran with 78 (I assume he's going to heat up), the other is Alex Bregman with 98. EVERYONE ELSE is better than 100, with most hovering in the 130-140 range and Marwin Gonzalez at 208 (!). Team OPS+ of 126, ERA+ of 108.

Unless somebody pulls a Tanya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan, the M's will do well to stay within 15 games of those guys.

17

They have the 4th highest batting BABiP in MLB(.312), and the 9th lowest pitching BABiP(.278) in spite of allowing the 5th most home runs by rate (1.36/9), and the league leading strand rate (80.9%) is also bound to decline.  Somehow, they have also benefitted from their main opposition being decimated by injury while the Astros have only had to do without Collin McHugh.  The Astros are perfectly capable of a losing streak and the Mariners are more than capable of winning more than 2 in a row.  We are less than 18%, so I'm far from willing to hope for 2nd Place.

18

Their park has always played up a bit for BABIP and they are a fast, athletic team with a bunch of guys who hit the ball hard.

the pitching BABIP is probably at least somewhat lucky and the strand rate is certainly lucky.  But I don't see them as a team that is likely to finish below 95 wins this year.

19

As far as league stats go, their Hard Contact % is 18th in the MLB, and their Soft Contact % is 12th.  Jose Altuve is batting 30 points above his career BABiP, Evan Gattis is 70 points above his, Nori Aoki is 20 points above his, Josh Reddick is +30.  Of the whole team, only George Springer and Marwin Gonzalez (.190, wow) are down from their normal BABiP.  The Mariners?  Gamel, Haniger, Cruz, and Segura are batting high, Cano, Valencia, Dyson, Motter, Ruiz, Vogelbach, and Martin are experiencing significantly unlucky BABiPs.

I do think the Astros are probably a 95+ win team as well, I just don't think that's entirely out of reach for the Mariners.  Paxton is pitching like he's about to compete for a Cy Young, and the rest of the rotation looks like it might just not explode while the offense produces 5-10 runs a game, and the Mariners start getting reloaded with 2 SPs, their 2nd and 3rd best bullpen arms, and their newly minted MVP Right Fielder.

As I see it, the Astros are just about as good as they get right now, but the Mariners are still finding their stride, and they're 5-3 since losing Haniger and Felix.

For me, the best thing about Miranda was that we got him for the steaming pile

that was Wade Miley. Not only did we escape that onerous contract, we got a

player who's a) younger b) cheaper c)better and d) under team control for 6 years

and optionable for 3. Also told you that keeping Gamel would be better than

our 11th best reliever.

Darvish has never won a game at Safeco!!!

But not saying you should call your bookie.

Only thing likely stopping the Astros are the Astros.

Oh, yeah, Cishek's quotes on overdoing his comebak was taken from the three diffeent quotation periods of a certain number one draft choice who didn't seem smart enough to tell the truth.

Since Cishek is such a Jesus believer, maybe he was waiting until Lent was over.

As to Scribner ... they've carried him for two years with "injuries".

Enough is enough.

Povse looms.

The 2017 Mariners Season: No You're Not Actually Allowed To Have Nice Things.

Could have been said about most Mariners seasons, in retrospect.

29

Lest anybody says that Bergman's atrocious career numbers (1.57 WHIP/5.79 ERA) are purely a product of Coors, it is worth noting that his career AWAY line is .295-.328-.498!  Of course that .826 is better than his career .946 in Coors, but that isn't saying much.

He does have 29 nice innings in Tacoma this season.  So we have that to hold on to.  Sort of.

Go team.

Old timer Alex Cobb being made available by Tampa.

I shudder to think of Gamel or Heredia or Motter for him.

Quintana "valuable" according to White Sox.

I cannot return to Vargas ... no  ... no.
