POTD Justin Upton - Four Q's Dept.

SSI readers more interested in Justin Upton than is Dr. D.  But, as you know, we live to serve ... :- )

.

Q.  What's the bottom line?

A.  One-third chance of each of the following things:

  1. Juan Gonzalez (HI)
  2. Andruw Jones (MID)
  3. B.J. Upton (LO)

Justin Upton's overrated by a pretty good portion of the track, and I ain't giving you Ackley and Smoak for him, but Upton's going to bat cleanup.

He's on the brink of becoming a marquee player.

=== You Had Me At Four Questions, Dept. ===

SABRMatt sez:

I like Upton...but I don't like him enough to trade Pineda and other big time prospects for him.

RotoChamp sez:

I absolutely trade Pineda+ for him, but I would not trade Ackley or Smoak in addition to Pineda. We're talking a Hamilton, Griffey, ARod type talent and already locked up for the next five years.

This is probably the lowest his value will ever be.

Honestly I would probably be willing to go as far as Pineda+Nick Franklin+Michael Saunders+Dan Cortes+more for Upton+Stephen Drew.

SABRMatt sez, say what?

Well, sure, you add Drew in there... and that changes the equation...Drew being at a psition we actually need.

But no...I would not trade Pineda for Upton...Upton is a mediocre left fielder as is, IMHO...nothing special.  He's got lots of potential, but that does not mean he's going to wind up as valuable as Hamilton...

Upton and Drew, well ... :- )  Stephen Drew was a 5.0 win player at a position I've also heard we have a need.  Offer me Drew and now we're talking about these blockbusters.

Between the two reasonable points-of-view that Taro and Matt offer here, I've got to gingerly side with SABRMatt, and will tell you exactly why.

As to the idea (around the 'net) of trading as much to get Justin Upton as you would trade to get Felix Hernandez -- um, no.  The blog-o-sphere's compass is off on that one, farther than it was off on the Erik Bedard trade.

Can't tell for sure, but it sounds like the consensus (elsewhere) is that if (1) Michael Pineda, (2) Dustin Ackley AND (3) Justin Smoak "would get Kevin Towers' attention" -- as if Arizona is going to get offers even bigger than that -- then obviously you do that.

If that's the consensus, then SSI is once more obligated to throw itself in front of the unstoppable train ...
