POTD Jaso - UP, MID, LO

 ...........

Q.  UP, MID, LO scenarios?

A.  We can't get too carried away by a catcher who runs a good K/BB ratio.  It happens.  Gregg Zaun's EYE was almost 1.0 -- he walked 479 times and struck out only 544 times in the big leagues.  Was he a threat?   Did you bite your fingernails when he stepped up with men on, or sigh with relief?  (He had 59 RBI per 162 games, career.)

Jim Essian was a similar catcher - way more BB's than K's for his career.  They're around, backstops who OPS+ 90 because of walks and a sound approach at the plate.

........

The Mariners had a decent backup catcher in the 1980's, Scott Bradley.  You remember him?   He walked 104 times, fanned 110, and had a miserable ISO as a left-hand catcher.  The OPS+ wound up at 76.  It's not like 85-90 is the floor for a catcher with a good EYE.  :- )

........

But on the other hand, let's say that Jaso gets into his crouch, and let's say he starts seeing the ball well -- is Daric Barton out of reach?  I don't think so.  In the UP scenario, Jaso could run a .360 OBP, even in Safeco, and bat second for you.  Wow.  That's an impact player.

Here, let's chart that:

UP Daric Barton 110-20 OPS+ .360 OBP, 80 R
MID Zaun, Essian 90 mehhh R and RBI
LO Scott Bradley 75 Doesn't kill you

If Jaso hits his Barton scenario, then that's where (as Gordon said) you're glad you didn't pay the Reds for one of their catchers.  I'm psyched to see if Jaso can do that.

Hey, he's inexperienced, he's adjusting, and it could happen.  You knew that Daric Barton had his ups and downs, as Jaso did in 2011?  You definitely can't over-emphasize one year, especially the Sophomore Slump year.

..........

Not sure there's any way to know where Jaso is going from here.  But supposing that the 2012-14 Mariners just added a left-handed Gregg Zaun, how big is that?

Very.

No brag, just fact.  Let's hope the Kotchman Slide isn't too severe, but John Jaso is a player you could win your next pennant with.

If you get Casey Kotchman arm-swinging a declerated bat, and he can't run, you're looking at a lousy BABIP.  That's axiomatic.  And it's much worse in Safeco.  Kotchman's career BABIP is only .280 -- and his year here, it was .229.

I don’t mind the arm-swing.  It kills his HR potential to some extent, but Seager’s swing does the same to him.  Kyle is faster than Jaso, so he’ll leg out more doubles, but I would be fine with having a Seager type behind the plate – and Jaso has a better eye than Seager.  Doubles and walks out of a catcher would be huge for us.  BABIP won't be stellar, but it shouldn't be as low as it was in 2011 either.
Jaso’s pretty consistent with his LD% as well.  18% and then 19% in his AA seasons, a spike to 25% in AAA, then back to 19% and 18% in his major-league seasons. Kotchman has years at 15%, 17% a couple of times... his high years of 19% or so match up with where Jaso’s always hanging out.  I don’t view his swing as being as mushy as the one Kotchman employs.  It’s not exactly Manny Ramirez's swing, but it ain’t Lamkin’s either.
Jaso hits a TON of groundballs.  In the Safe, that can be better than fly balls (depending on whether they’re rockets or 4-hoppers to short, of course).  It can also kill rallies with double-plays, so how those groundballs are hit is very important.
BTW, as far as minor league numbers go, Jaso destroys Zaun (.290/.380/.440 vs .260/.340/.370) across the same ages and basic # of plate appearances.
Zaun got everything out of his skillset that was possible.  If Jaso does that he’ll be the superior player in every offensive way.  It’s nice to have a player who’s MID is Zaun, not his HIGH.
But still, if he “only” becomes Greg Zaun, that’s a pretty good place to be and much better than our catching situation since Joh’s good years.

By my count.  Avila, Santana, McCann, Wieters, Miguel Montero, maybe Y. Molina.
Debatable, based on playing time, there are Ianetta, Ramos, Ruiz, maybe Russell Martin.
If Jaso fails to regain his 2010 form, he's still looking at above-average offensive production.  The M's got themselves a hitting catcher, who fits the park.  No doubts there.
