Player of the Day: Andy Rose

This middle fielder comes to the Seattle Sounders from Bristol, England. He was born, however, in Melbourne, Australia. Andy Rose wears the #5 Sounders uniform. He is 25 years old, born on February 15, 1990. Rose weighs 170 pounds and stands at 6’2.

Real Salt Lake chose Rose during the Supplemental Draft on January 17, 2011. Then the team traded him to Seattle. Since joining with the Sounders team, Rose has played in 82 games. He started in 42 of those. Rose has played a total of 4208 minutes on the field in his four seasons with the team during the (regular season). He’s taken 52 shots, making five goals and seven assists in that time. Although he has never received a red card, he has had 10 yellow cards during those four seasons.

During the post season, Rose has appeared in eight games. During those, he scored a total of three games. All were during the same year, in this past 2015 season. He played 300 minutes in three games during the 2015 post season. 2015 was also his most active year during the regular season, with 25 appearances.

Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid says that Rose has not only good vision, but that he is also an accomplished striker on the team. Schmid says that Rose works hard and is serious about the game. The coach also praised his large size.

During his youth career, Rose played in the U18 level after moving to Bristol City and joining their academy. He was 12 years old at the time. He played for Bristol City from 2002 to 2008. Later in his youth, he also played for the UCLA Bruins, from 2008 to 2011. He was the UCLA team captain as well as selected for the All-Pac-12 First Team.

In his senior year, he played with the Seattle Wolves in 2009. He made eight appearances that season but scored no goals. From 2010 to 2011, he was a member of the Ventura County Fusion. He had a better run with the team, appearing 22 times and scoring nine goals. Since 2012, he has been with the Sounders.   

Bristol’s parents are Graham and Barbara Rose. Athleticism runs in the Rose family; his sister played tennis while attending Northwestern University. Playing in Seattle is not Rose’s first experience in living the American life; he also lived in Chicago for a time.
