Player of the Day: Abby Bishop
Number 5 for the Seattle Storm

She comes from Australia, but she’s a strong force on the Seattle Storm. Abby Bishop is a forward and center player on the team. She was born on November 29, 1988. She is 6’2 tall and weighs 180 pounds. She was born in Booleroo, South Australia. Bishop has earned an average of 13.8 points per game during her career. She has also averaged 8.3 rebounds per game and 1.4 assists per game.

Before playing for the Storm, Bishop played for the Australian Institute of Sport. That experience lasted from 2005 to 2006. Later, she played for the Canberra Capitals from 2006 to 2010. Bishop was with the Dandenong Rangers from 2010 to 2011. From 2011 to 2012, she played for the Adelaide Lightening. Since 2013, she has played for the Canberra Capitals.

Bishop was a rookie on the Storm team in 2010. After playing in just 16 games and averaging 2.8 points and 1.3 rebounds per game, she suffered a concussion and decided to work on the Australian Olympics afterward rather than continuing with the Storm during that time. She told the press, “It's about staying here and showing myself to the coaches where if I'm going back to America, it's going to be a little bit harder, not playing.” She signed on the team again on February 20, 2015 after she played for the WNBL for half a decade.

Some of Bishop’s notable accomplishments include earning the bronze medal three times during the Olympic Games, gold medals during the Oceania World Qualification Series in 2006 and 2007, and being a basketball star on myFiba. She also played during the Good Luck Beijing 2008, and she was the youngest person playing. She was the Women’s National Basketball League 2014/15 League Most Valuable Player.

Bishop was the leader in the WNBL in both points and rebounds during the 2014 to 2015 season. The record included 10.6 rebounds per game as well as 23 points per game. In 2012, Bishop played against New Zealand in the qualifier for the Olympics. She also made the Women’s National Basketball League 2009 calendar.

One of her most Storm highlights happened during a game when she scored five field goals against Connecticut.

In her personal life, Bishop cares for her niece, whom she took custody of in August of 2013. Fans of Bishop can follow her on Twitter to see her photos, news stories and other tidbits.
