Seahawks set 53 -- for now
Seattle trades for safety, cuts Blackmon; Jackson not yet added

The Seahawks acquired safety Kelcie McCray from Kansas City, cut Will Blackmon and placed Robert Turbin on injured reserve as they reduced their roster from 75 to 53 on Saturday.

They kept five draft picks, including conversion project Kristjan Sokoli, and let three go, including fourth-rounder Terry Poole. They also were expected to add Fred Jackson at some point during the weekend, meaning another player would be cut.

The Hawks' other cuts Saturday: QB R.J. Archer; RB Rod Smith; WRs Kevin Smith and WR Kasen Williams; TEs Anthony McCoy and RaShaun Allen; OGs Will Pericak and Keavon Milton; DLs Julius Warmsley, Obum Gwacham and T.Y. McGill; LBs Eric Pinkins, Alex Singleton and Tyrell Adams; CB Doug McNeil, safeties Ron Martin, Ryan Murphy and Keenan Lambert.

Pinkins was a sixth-round pick in 2014, and Gwacham and Murphy were late-round picks this year. All seem very possible practice squad candidates.

Along with Turbin, cornerback Mohammed Seisay (separated shoulder) was placed on injured reserve. Defensive tackle Jesse Williams, recovering from cancer, was placed on the non-football illness list.

Christine Michael, whom the Hawks reportedly were trying to trade (and still might be), made the roster.  Michael's days seemed to be numbered after he failed to force his way past Turbin in either of his two seasons after the Hawks drafted him in the second round in 2013. Michael's grand tallies over two years: 52 carries and 254 yards.

The Hawks also kept undrafted running back Thomas Rawls -- for now. It is very possible either Rawls or Michael gets cut once Jackson arrives.

The Hawks reportedly were going to waived/injured Turbin, but they decided against risking losing him and placed him directly on IR, which means they will have to pay his salary as he misses his contract year -- unless they reach a settlement and allow him to become a free agent. His high ankle sprain is expected to be healed in about five weeks.

Blackmon was brought in to add a veteran presence at nickel back, but the Hawks clearly are content to go with younger, cheaper players. They kept 10 defensive backs, including Dion Bailey and rookie Tye Smith.

The trade for McCray reportedly involved a 2016 fifth-rounder. The 2012 undrafted free agent is considered a top special-teams player. The Hawks had been reported to be talking to teams about veteran safeties as Kam Chancellor continues his holdout.

Nothing has changed on that front, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson, who also said Chancellor's agents have not been informed of any teams wanting to trade for him. The Giants are the one team known to have called, but John Schneider reportedly has received plenty of calls.
