Seahawks draft for depth not flash
per usual

Another draft, another yawn when it comes to the Seahawks draft class. Not since Pete Carroll and John Schneider's first years in Seattle have they made anything resembling waves come draft day. That year remember they had two first round picks, picking Earl Thomas and Russell Okung.

Sure, they have made some very good picks; just look at Richard Sherman, Russell Wilson and Kam Chancellor. But none of those picks caught anybody's attention, save for maybe Wilson, although he was a mere third round pick.

This year, they traded down to the 31st overall pick after holding the 26th pick until draft day. The Seattle brain trust used it on  Germain Ifedian offensive tackle out of Texas A&M. Again it follows a trend of Schneider and Carroll drafting on based on what they like in a player, much like how they picked Bruce Irvin 15th overall in 2012, despite many "experts" bemoaning that he was drafted too high.

Ifedi is of a similar mold in that he was not graded as the most NFL ready, plus he's not even an all important left tackle. Beyond the obvious fact that the Seahawks like Ifedi's skillset, this picks says two things loud and clear: that they trust Tom Cable completely, and that they think Gary Gilliam is capable of protecting Russell Wilson's blindside.

Regarding the former point, their faith in Tom Cable may be a bit misguided. Yes, he has done some good things, but last year they trusted him to mold Drew Nowak into a starting NFL center and coach up the offensive line unit and it never really happened. It was a good call to bench Nowak midway through the year, but he failure of the line to take shape might have cost the Hawks a couple wins. Wins that could have secured another NFL West championship.

No one should expect a home run by the Hawks in the first round, they simply don't have the need to make a splash with a quarterback or safety, especially not with where they usually pick towards the back end of the first round. Reports are saying that the Seahawks believe Ifedi may have what it takes to shift over to left tackle in time, but in the mean time he will be given every opportunity to earn a starting spot at right tackle.

In the end they drafted how they needed to, adding depth along the line, and as with all things NFL Draft, we really won't know anything about Ifredi's skills until after the season at least.
