Seahawks 36-6 Cardinals - Three Takeaways
I got yer nanobubbles right here, pal

.

So, ALL of us were scared about the Cardinals.  That's "about" the Cardinals, not "of" the Cardinals.  Scared "about" them because they have the kinda back-alley defense the 49ers used to have, and because they're an excellent 46-1 with Carson Palmer healthy.

They led the NFL in yards and in scoring offense.  Yes, Egbert, we get it; DVOA is better than yards like xFIP is better than ERA.  Thing is, at SSI we see the game as well as the stats.  Well, hang on ... John Fraley seems to see a game pretty good too.  Oh well whatever nevermind

Point is, the Cardinals have the feature receivers and the feature back behind Palmer, and ... well, who had found an answer to it all?  Nobody.  It's like saying Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz mighta had the best ERA, but they were only 3rd in xFIP this year?  No, the Cardinals were SSI's consensus Best Team in the NFL.

We were scared "about" their situation because when you're hardcore, you're not scared "of" anybody.  You bring your own game, you can win.  Whoever it is, up to and including the Paul Browns.

The Seahawks crushed the Cardinals like a pop can.  In their building.  I'd say it's the most impressive Seahawks win I've seen, surpassing even the 43-8 Broncos Super Bowl ... well, there was the Robber Baron 49ers game.  Prob'ly that one was better, but it was in CLink, right?

Point is.  It isn't POSSIBLE to beat the Seattle Seahawks by 30 points, now is it?  It's very possible to do that to the Cardinals, though.  The Seahawks do it every year.  In their howse.

.....

TOMORROW'S NEWS TODAY Dept.  Last week, the Seahawks set a personal record by never leading in the game.  SSI advised you, about that specific game, that it was just sports.  It's interesting to compare the yards from scrimmage the last two weeks:

Seattle O Seattle D
Rams 312 205
Angry Birds 354 232

A lot of times the points, or runs, fool you.  ... Granted, against the Rams, the Seahawks were out of synch, and against the Cardinals they were playing 110% speed.  But they were the same team at bone level.  The Rams loss wasn't "puzzling"; it was just sports.  Some nights you're hitting your three-pointers.  Nobody hits them EVERY night.  It's sports!

.....

Dr. D asked the Cardinals SB Nation site (no, he really didn't) what was the takeaway from the game.  The answer thundered like the Niagara.  "The Seahawks wanted to win and the Cardinals wanted to lose."  Check out Revenge of the Birds.  It's almost the polar opposite of Niners Nation; they're both self-comforting and self-justifying, but on opposite ends of the politeness-rudeness spectrum :- )

Dr. D found this "we didn't care" idea implausible.  So he asked the 4th-grade class (yes, he really did) what were the three takeaways from that Cardinals game?  There's a whale of a lot to be said for the 4th-grade class.  Just a show of hands, kids.  Did Dez catch the ball or not?  The kids know things the lawyers don't, such as what "Tell me the truth now" means.

The kids said there were three takeaway.  All made the cynical Dr. D smile:

  • The Seahawks are going to win the Super Bowl
  • When the going gets tough, the tough get going
  • Russell Wilson is carrying the team on his back

All three of these things cut through the sabermetrics.  Which is, of course, the whole point of asking kids.  We adults talk ourselves into a great state of confusion, such as whether Quintin Tarentino "reflects" violence or "revels in" violence.

.

RUSSELL WILSON IS ELITE.   There are only a few QB's who can, and will, personally win you a game you otherwise would have lost.  After 3.5 seasons, Wilson became that player.  He's a franchise QB and his peers are now Brees, Rodgers, Brady, and a couple of others maybe.  I'll pay money to watch HIM face off against THEM.

I got your nanobubbles right here, pal.  The "takeaway" is clear.  If Russell Wilson were doing anything other than force-feeding the Field Gulls crowd a long series of mechanical victories, then his worldview would make him a laughingstock.  Yes, it would.

.

I get to go to Vegas next week. I just can't BELEEVE it
I get to go to Vegas next week. I just can't BELEEVE it

.

Since Wilson is proving himself to be somewhat other than Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III and Johnny Manziel, we might pause for a second and ask whether his Old School worldview gets any credit now?  Naaaahhhhh.  But oh how sweet is it, for those fans who didn't jeer this offseason.  :- )  Like James says, stick with players during their down cycles and it makes the winning more fun.

Little retro for yer, though.  Scouts have been telling us, for 100 years, that Russell Wilson's family orientation is preferable to Johnny Manziel's "I plan on enjoying my life to the fullest." *  All three sports, the coaches have taken Wilson over Manziel, forever.

*Rehab and bankruptcy aren't as much fun as they're cracked up to be.

.

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GET GOING.  Saber considers "tough" a dirty word.  Pete Carroll doesn't seem to, as much.  Once again, stand in awe as the Think Tank offers you a new paradigm every day.  Anyone who wants to enjoy the 2012-16 Seahawks through a "toughness" camera lens has Dr. D's blessing.

There is nobody, anywhere, who can make Richard Sherman back down.  There is nothing that can happen to Russell Wilson, no play, no person, that will Kaepernick him.  There is no talking Darrell Bevell out of his theories on playcalling.

.

THE SEAHAWKS ARE GOING TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL.  Yes, we all know stuff happens.  Very good, LrKrBoi29.  Now shaddap and siddown.  The clarinet tone that cuts through the bass section is this:  the Seahawks have the best roster in the NFL.

You can talk about 10 degree weather, and fumble ratio, and DVOA, and matchups.  What we forget to talk about is, who has the best players.

The defense has what, seven star players.  The offense has reached the point to where, yesterday, it would have scored on its first EIGHT drives, but for one missed field goal.  Which is better?  Thanks to Russell Wilson, it's a whale of a contest.

.

Be Afraid.  Be Very Afraid,

Dr D

And they did it without Marshawn Lynch or Thomas Rawls. Without Russell Okung. Without Kam Chancellor. Without Jimmy Graham or Luke Willson. Against the best. On the road.

I admit like many I fully expected the Hawks to lose because of all these factors. My main concern going in was that we didn't lose any MORE key players to injury. My entry theme, get healthy for the Wild Card game. Win if you can, don't sweat it if you can't. The REAL season starts next weekend.

But the Hawks put pedal to the metal from the first play. Tyler Lockett tilted the field big time with his returns. Christine Michael gashed some runs. Backup tight ends caught TD passes from a sizzling Wilson. The Cardinals were rocked back on their feet and never recovered. The defense gave up some passes for first downs, but that's about it. They stymied Arizona.

When Seattle has been bad this season, they've been very, very bad. But like you said, their roster is so good that even when they're very, very bad they only get beat by a small margin.

When Seattle has been good this season, they've been remarkable.

It has been a very up and down season, with long stretches of both. As we head into the REAL season, we realize:

(1) The Hawks can be had if they don't play well.

(2) If they play well, nobody can beat them.

  1. The defense is playing lights out and was opportunistically, which was nice, but what is nicer is that the RUN defense is making the other team one dimensional right now and NOT COMMITING EXTRA MEN to get that done.  THAT is a big deal...  because now the enemy O has to ry to throw the ball against a full complement of defender even on running downs!
  2. Radio show today was asking...  "Why didn't they take Wilson out of the game 2 series earlier than they did?" and all I could think was, "Dr D need to give this clown a learnin'!"  They didn't take him out earlier, and even felt quesy about it when they did because...  it goes against the very nature of the team...  the "Always Compete" nature instilled by the coaches.  This also lends itself to the other Seattle team in town we like to chat about...  When and if the Mariners truly instill the "C  the Z" mindset into the organization, we will know it because it will pervade in ways unseen now, unlike the lip service treatment of the JackZ era if JeDi truly gets it deep in the players bones you will see it come out in unique ways, like your franchise QB wanting to finish the last game of the regular season even when up by 30 and the other guys have already taken out their starter...  :)
  3. Finally...  what about that Lockett guy!  Dude can REALLY return a punt, some of those cuts we unpossible and made the Cardinals attempting tackler look silly Silly SILLY!  What fun!  Turns out the kid can catch a few as a WR too!  Bonus!

The Steelers didn't play 6, 7 dawgs though.  The subs Frank Clark, Bruce Irvin and Jordan Hill ... there again we've got a starting DL for the bottom-enders.  Just unreal.

In baseball we have labels and players can't get out of them ... the Seahawks are typecast worse than William Shatner.  People are having a hard time adjusting to the reality, which is that a handful of the D awesomeness has slid forward.  Personally, I'm enjoying the fresh new look to the dogfest.

I'd like to hear the objective opinions of the Seahawk fans who are more "up" on the game than me.  Who's the better pure kick returner - Harvin (at his best) or Tyler Lockett?

Harvin was a K.O. guy, IIRC, but adjusting for that I mean.  Harvin was just about the most electric I ever saw, but am not sure Lockett isn't as good or better.

....

If that were so, the Q wouldn't be whether Lockett was worth a 1st-rounder - Q might be whether he was worth two!

In any case, that draft-day maneuver looks awfully glitzy.  Like there was exactly 1 team who knew who Tyler Lockett was.

....

Also would be interested to hear about how long it is that Avril and Bennett are going to be playing the way they are.  Maybe through 2016?  Any chance they will still be getting this kind of pressure in 2017?

Harvin, at his best, is a better pure kick returner. His athleticism is other-worldly. I remember a Baseball Prospectus tidbit on Rafael Soriano when he was at the top of his game. They called his fastball 'Lovecraftian.' That'll do for Harvin's innate athleticism, too.

Harvin has rare top-end speed, rare agility/elusiveness (even in tight spaces), vision, understands blocking schemes and sets up his blocks accordingly, neigh Golden Tate-esque gyroscopic balance, and toughness/bravery.

Lockett has good top-end speed, excellent agility/elusiveness, intelligence (football and otherwise), vision, understands blocking schemes and sets up his blocks accordingly, work ethic, and clutchiness (he steps up against top-end competition. Seriously, it's in his scouting report.).

Harvin's rare athleticism is what separates the two. In the return game.

The difference in athletic ability is small enough that the difference in skill becomes the deciding factor. Or is it the other way around?

Harvin has hands that are 1 inch larger, arms that are 1 inch longer, 10 extra pounds of muscle, and innate brain/body control that is at the pinnicle of human ability.

Lockett likes to block. Harvin dogs plays not going his way.

Lockett is a super-polished route-runner. Harvin depends on his freakish physical ability to make the spectacular play (and comes through).

The durability concerns that dog the both of them have blossomed for Harvin but haven't yet shown up consistently for Lockett.

Exec Sum - Harvin, at his best for one play, is far superior. Lockett, consistently, is preferable to have on one's team.

My opinion is that we are watching the end of the Avril/Bennett era. Bennett will NOT return next year.

Facts:

  • Bennett will hold out for a new contract next year. (Yes, fact)
  • Cutting Bennett will result in a net $10.5 mil savings against the cap. $3 mil in 2016 ($4 mil dead cap vs. $7 mil salary) and $7.5 mil in 2017 ($2 mil dead cap vs. $9.5 mil salary).
  • Bennett's replacement, Frank Clark, has fulfilled expectations

The ideal scenario is that we see one more year of Bennett at his current salary. That will not happen. Bennett nearly held out at an $8 mil salary THIS year. Expecting him to take a $1 mil paycut after a dominant statistical season, as someone who has made it abundantly clear to anyone who will listen that $$ is, by far, the most important thing to him, is wishcasting.

The Seahawks salary cap is currently stretched to its limit in the most Stars and Scrubs configuration imaginable in the NFL and, next year, Russell Wilson's cap hit REALLY starts. It cannot handle one more Star, especially when there is a comparable scrub waiting in the wings (Frank Clark) and ESPECIALLY especially when that Star has a negative aspect associated with his play (penalties).

A holdout staredown until he blinks, will not happen because

1.     They just did that with Kam and did not like the result

2.     Bennett is crazy enough to follow through with a season-long holdout

So the Seahawks will trade him (if lucky) or suck up the dead space and cut him.

The ONLY scenario that I foresee where the Seahawks keep Bennett next year is if they cut Jimmy Graham (no dead cap hit) and use that money to restructure Bennett. If they value Bennett THAT MUCH over Jimmy or are sure that Jimmy's knee injury is sufficient that he'll never be the same, sure, it could happen.

I think that's the unlikely scenario, though.
