Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for June 5
Taylor and Austin rack up hits in the desert ... Sharkie still virtually walk-free ... etc.

As you no doubt saw, with the injury to Jesus Sucre (Watch List) not super-serious, the team chose to give a cuppa coffee to Brandon Bantz.  The 40-man roster move making that possible was to transfer Franklin Gutierrez, who was not deemed healthy enough to go back on the MLB roster, to the 60-day DL.

Of course, as it happened, the Bantz "insurance policy" kicked in on the day of a 16-inning game, leaving Alex Liddi (Talk40 #29) as the only available bench player (other than Bantz, who would only play if there was a disaster).  So no position-player moves were made for the entire contest.

On the pitching side, Hector Noesi was the last man standing, and reportedly he will return to Tacoma so that a fresh arm (reportedly Blake Beavan) can join the Big Club.

And Bantz won't last once Sucre is able to catch again (Sucre was not put on the DL).  Justin Smoak coming off the DL will bump him or Liddi, and expect Carlos Triunfel (26intheMix) to return as a backup infielder when there's room.

Meanwhile, on the field ... Tacoma was off and Jackson rained out again, leaving two actual games.

High-A -- High Desert 15, Bakersfield 9 -- Box

One day after a rare pitchers' duel in Adelanto, it was back to traditional Cal League pinball.

But starter Stephen Landazuri (Talk40 #24) emerged relatively unscathed: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K.

And that was good for the win, thanks to a serious boost of offense from the top of the Maverick order:

Chris Taylor (Talk40 #28): 3-for-5, double, 2 singles, walk, steal (his 17th), 4 runs

Jamal Austin: 4-for-5, double, 3 singles, 2 steals (18th, 19th)

And the Mavs got homers from Ramon Morla (his 6th) and Kevin Rivers (his 8th).

The Blash Splash parade has finally slowed down: just a double for Jabari Blash (Watch List).

Low-A -- Peoria 4, Clinton 1 -- Box

Dylan "Sharkie" Unsworth (26intheMix) was his usual walk-free self -- two (two!) on the season  in 62.0 IP -- but it wasn't quite enough for the win.

Sharkie: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

But the offense was pretty much just Guillermo Pimentel (26intheMix), who provided two doubles.

Looking Ahead

Jackson will try again, this time with an afternoon double-header.  Once again, Anthony Fernandez (Talk40 #23) will be slated for one of the starts.  Tyler Pike (Talk40 #14) is scheduled for Clinton.

Tacoma's starter is TBA, but opposing Las Vegas is set to send former Rainier D.J. Mitchell to the mound.
