Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for August 29
Taijuan Day arrives ... a good return for Sharkie, but a bad night for Lars ... etc.

Happy Taijuan Day!

And also likely to be Michael Morse Trade to Orioles Day, though that's still up in the air.

AAA -- Salt Lake 8, Tacoma 4  -- Box

The Bees broke open a tight contest by scoring four runs in the 7th off of ... *sigh* ... Tom Wilhelmsen.  His Tacoma ERA is now 10.50.

Stefen Romero (Talk40 #11) got his ninth homer of the year, and Ty Kelly raised his amazing Mariner OBP to .447 with three more hits.

Mike Zunino (Talk40 #1): 0-for-3, walk

AA -- Jackson 5, Huntsville 3 -- Box

Ramon Morla collected his 18th homer of the year.  He's slugging .501 (High Desert inflated), but I remain skeptical of his long-term prospects.

Chris Taylor (Talk40 #28) pretty much checked all the Chris Taylor boxes: double, single, walk, steal, error.

Once again, The Carson Show! concluded the evening's programming.  It was the 15th save for Carson Smith (Talk40 #13): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

High-A -- High Desert 14, Rancho Cucamonga 3 -- Box

Big offense from the Mavericks, paced by Jabari Henry (26intheMix), who had a triple, a double, a single and a walk, and Guillermo Pimentel (26intheMix) who also did exactly that.

And Jamal Austin had a triple and a double as well.

Jordy Lara delivered a three-run shot.

Low-A -- Clinton 3, Peoria 2 -- Box

Just when you thought it was safe ...

Dylan "Sharkie" Unsworth (26intheMix) returned to Clinton: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

Total number of walks allowed by Sharkie this year in 66.0 IP: 2

For his career, he's faced 1098 batters and walked 32 of them.

And he doesn't do it by serving up meatballs.  Only two HR allowed this year, and .087 ISO-against.

Gabriel Guerrero (Talk40 #16) had two hits.

Short Season-A -- Spokane 12, Everett 3 -- Box

But not such a nice night for another international youngster.  Lars Huijer got shelled, though it wasn't as bad as it looked: 1.2 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.

He did give up a pair of back-to-back doubles, but most of the damage was on singles, and then his final two charged runs came in on a double allowed by his bullpen.

We'll count it as a "mulligan."

The Aqua Sox didn't seem too interested in crawling out of the hole, as they were held without an extra-base hit.

Rookie -- Pulaski 4, Elizabethton 2 -- Box

Jesus Ugueto got his seventh homer of the year.  He's slugging .492, but has the same aversion to walks that Morla has.

Meanwhile, Aaron Barbosa just keeps hitting: double, two singles, steal.  He has 36 hits in his first 30 games.

Looking Ahead

The regular season is winding down, and the Arizona Rookie League is already done, and certainly nothing will overshadow Taijuan Day.

Tacoma reports that Forrest Snow (Watch List) will fill in on the Rainier mound.
