Rick sez,

Sun 7:30pm: guestdccoicnk  Jeff: Want would Bobby Fischer say about the Mariners this season, assuming that he actually cared. Rick

.

Well, he would start by complaining bitterly about every ball-strike call that went against him.  (Fischeresque conspiracy "jokes" withheld per Dr. D's better judgment!) And after the second Oakland loss, he'd have booked three flights out of town, intending to take them all if the umpires weren't changed.  But once the ballgame started, he would go into a trance of objectivity and in-game awareness to make Gandhi ashamed.

Still, let's assume that he'd just won two of three in NY and sold an interview for $50,000 to his best friend - he might go along the lines of

.

ON POPULAR SKEPTICISM RE:  NELSON CRUZ, DAE-HO LEE, SEUNG HWAN OH, AND THE NPB:

"I don't listen to weakies."

"You can't explain what's going on to them.  They wouldn't know a good move if they SAW it."

.

ON THE M'S 2016 SEARCH FOR IDENTITY

"Psychologically, you HAVE to have confidence in yourself and this confidence should be based on FACT."

"I prepare myself well. I know what I can do before I go in. I'm always confident."

.

ON THE ORCS

"I like to see 'em squirm.  Chess is war over the board. The object is to crush the opponent's mind."

.

ON KYLE SEAGER'S CODE OF CONDUCT

"Chess IS life."

.

ON JAMES PAXTON

"All that matters on the chessboard is good moves.  It is not enough to be a good player.  You must also play good."

.

ON LONE STAR BALL and HISASHI IWAKUMA

"Yeah, I know he was below strength in our game.  People have been playing against me below their strength for fifteen years."

.

ON BOOG POWELL

"You can only get good if you love the game.  I'm not so sure the Russians do."

.

ON CHRIS IANNETTA

"There are nice guys and there are tough players, and I'm a tough player."

.

ON ERIK BEDARD and DAE-HO LEE

"Is it against the law to kill a reporter?"

.

ON THE AL WEST STANDINGS

"My opponents make good moves too. Sometimes I don't take these things into consideration."

.

ON KING'S COURT

"Sometimes girls write me. One girl in Yugoslavia sent me a whole slew of love letters. I don't know how she got my address. She was in a crowd watching me play. She says when I left there the stars fell out of the sky over Yugoslavia, or something like that."

.

ON THE M'S 2-6 START

"Americans like a winner. If you lose, you're nothing.  I'm a stronger player (than Spassky) and a long match favors me."

.

ON FELIX' DRY SPITTER

"It began to feel as though you were playing against chess itself." -- Walter Shipman (on playing against Fischer)

"When you play Bobby, it is not a question if you win or lose. It is a question if you survive." -- Boris Spassky

.

ON THE M's 1-4 RECORD IN 1-RUN GAMES

"There is only one thing Fischer does in chess without pleasure: lose!" -- Boris Spassky

I had a dream, and there was great shtick therein. But it wasn't this good.  This post was December 2012 good.  You can retire in peace now, Doc.

Laughed so much this morning, and also enjoyed some excellent reflection. Thanks, Doc!
