More MLB Trade Rumors
M's in great position to supplement Diaz

.

Three or four diff'rnt MLBTR staffers had their own chats up this week.  In no particular order, here is what THEY have to say:

.

(1) Chris Sale, Zack Greinke and Justin Verlander the most likely Opening Day starters to be dealt.  But Sale will take 3x Top 100 type prospects, say they

.

(2) Jeff Todd likes Jackie Bradley Jr. for a young ace :: ahem :: Paxton or Taijuan and ?

.

(3) The Grand Free Agent Tour centers around Orlando Cespedes, says Todd

.

(4) Zack Cozart will bring lots of offers because of industry need at the position

.

(5) Odorizzi would be easier to trade for than Archer, who would require a handful of glitzy kids

.

(6) J.D. Martinez has value, but not the kind of glam value the Tigers fans would like to believe (all MLBTR staffers seem to agree on dat)  Oh yeah, and the Tigers are talking "big changes"

.

(7) "Very safe assumption" that Bautista and Encarnacion are leaving the Jays, per Steve Adams

.

(8) Basic agreement that Dexter Fowler will get 4/$52-60MM (sounds quite reasonable) ... wasn't much of a market for him last year and he's getting older, so the song goes ... I dunno, the Mainframe is definitely IN at that price

.

(9)  "Way less" than 3/45 for Mike Napoli this winter.  Bill James had an amusing line in Hey Bill ... "Shlabotnik or Napoli for Game Seven?" to which Bill retorted, "Did Mike get a good night's sleep?"

.

(10) Adams asked, "who is your sleeper FA?"  Reply, "Every reliever available?"  Let them tassste the double gunzzzz...

Could Edwin Diaz become an elite closer?
Steve Adams

I'd argue that he already is. I recognize that a lot of people will need to see him do it over a full season, but he was so overpowering in 2016... really exciting sort of out-of-the-blue development for M's fans.

Jackie Bradley Jr. is a guy I'd think about trading Walker for.  I'm imagining the rangy howitzers in CF and RF.  JBJR is 26 with experience.  Kind of guy I'd never think was available.  Much of the rest of the resources would have to go to the rotation at that point but I could see Bradley staying a long time.

Got to say Fowler would then be my second favorite target.  Wait, as low as $13mm x 4?  Walker does seem like a higher cost, especially considering you'd then almost have to spend in that range on the rotation.  So do you like Walker + Fowler better than Bradley + Pitcher X?  I could see Bradley + a SP acquisition being better.  Whatever gravy might get poured out in addition to Walker.

Paxton is a name I'd avoid even saying to other GMs.  I'd only refer to him with pronouns, as leads the phrase "He's not available".  I'd honestly prefer the same with Walker but mini JB has me thinking maybe.

Cozart might be costly?  Plan B for me was Desmond who's got $100 million contract estimates.  I'm assuming those journalists are taking the over when they say "$100 million contract".  Not so sure that's the right way to go at that cost.  Not so sure they're right either.  He turned down a 7 year $107 million extension, but that was 3 years ago.  Let's say 5 years is the right number now, is he worth 20+ per?  MLBTR suggests something comparable to Zobrists 4/54.  So somewhere in the neighborhood of Fowler but can play a decent SS as well.  How about Bradley and Desmond then?   Imagine if Marte put things together, later in the year the starting outfield could be Martin, Bradley and Desmond,  #6/7/10 in OF ARM this year (respectively and among qualified).  Go, take the base, please!  Cespedes was 11th.

Kind of OF that could help Walker ease into a rocking chair.  But then he'd be gone.

interesting to me that his name comes up.  What, does Boston have a replacement lurking for him or something?  Agreed that Taijuan+ sounds like an interesting discussion...

I don't get it either Moe why Dexter Fowler is so cheap, at least on the grapevine.  Didn't Jacoby Ellsbury break the bank a few years back?  Seems also that even Michael Bourn got quite a bit more, inflation adjusted.  Check me on that.  Nobody seems to buy in to Fowler much.

It sounds like Marcell Ozuna may be made available.

I would offer Nathan Karns + Ariel Miranda for Ozuna. Gives them 2 pitchers that will be cheap for years. The Marlins need rotation ready arms. It would leave the Mariners plenty of payroll available to go after a trade for a guy like Ervin Santana or sign a Rich Hill type.

With Paul Blackburn, Luiz Gohara, Andrew Moore, Nick Neidert, et. al in the near future, with the addition of a veteran starter, I still like our depth going into 2017.
