Game One for Gonzalez
How did he do?

Could a pep talk from Head Coach Sigi Schmid have led to the big draw over the weekend? Fans are chalking it up to substitutions made in the middle of the game, but it sounds like Schmid had some choice words to use for the Seattle Sounders. “Halftime talk was just simply that we didn’t come out to play in the first half. We’re rested, we are fit … I said there was no reason not to put in the effort. I challenged them and obviously, as a team, they responded,” he said. Wow. I don’t know about you, but “I challenged them” sounds like “I let them have it!” To be a fly on that locker room wall…

Most people are dubbing it a win for Seattle due to the mixed performances during the game. It may have been Chad Marshall’s goal that saved Seattle from racking up another loss, but Marshall shrugged it off. “We’re happy to take a point give the way the game went,” Marshall said. “We look to carry the momentum from these last two games into Philly next week and hopefully get a good result at home.” The Sounders’ stats are now 0-3-4.

Of course, fans also got to see Hercules Gomez back on the Emerald City field after years of playing for other teams. Gomez, who stands at 5’10 and weighs 160 pounds, came in during the 79th minute and almost made his first assist while back on the team, but was blocked by Houston. Even so, he was a strong presence on the field, showing that he can be a powerful player while subbing in. Does that mean he’ll get a chance to start very soon? Probably not, but we shouldn’t rule that out. On his Twitter page, Gomez says, “It just feels good to help out and be part of a good result.”  Gotta love that kind of positive attitude. After the game, he simply tweeted, “That. Felt. Great. Let’s do it again soon…”

Gomez has no shortage of fans on Twitter, either. He has a consistent stream of followers who offered congratulations for his first time back on the field, encouraging him for his near-assist and generally mirroring the same positivity we are seeing from the 34-year-old player. It looks like he’s not only bringing some decent skills to the team, but also some positivity, which is an underrated but deeply needed quality for any team. What did you think of Gomez’s first match? Think we’ll be seeing more of him soon?
