Cards Fail to Sacrifice KFC to Jobu, Pull Off Non-Win
and Dr. D is cc'ed on the Zack Cozart deal, at long last

.

FOOTBALL VERSION OF ROCKY II (if Rocky had needed one more count, causing a draw)

Dr. D's stream of consciousness (non-)thoughts on the Seahawk game, which you amigos (and jschario - see his report in the football area) can improve with little or no effort:

1)  Have never been more proud of a single defensive effort.  Pete Carroll also at halftime was seen jumping around high-fiving his attack dogs.  Remember Buddy Ryan leaving the Bears and telling his men through tears "You guys are my heroes!" ?   How many plays did they defend, like 90?  I never really believed in a Seahawk defense the way I believe in this one.  Which is saying kinda much.

1b) Who or what was that new #92 widebody?  Jarran Reed's brother from another mother?  Looked like an important add from here.

1c)  Did it look to you like Frank Clark leaped a plateau?  Yowch! if he did.

2) That was like watching the Seahawks' defense and special teams play a game under the penalty of getting no offensive snaps.  Or, if you like, Seahawk D + ST with the Johnny Knoxville All-Stars having to play offense - against the St. Louis* Cardinals.  ?? ... Tie game. ?!

3)  Carson Palmer looked nothing like the Palmer of last year to me.  Wow.  I don' sweat the Cards this year.  Not if Palmer is going to play like that.

4)  If you guys have the slightest idea what Tom Cable is going to do this week, trying to fix the leaks in the hull while out at sea away from dry dock, please advise.  Seriously.  That, and who #92 was.

5)  Not sure I've ever seen an NFL game that looked more like the home squad built their stadium on an ancient burial ground.  This was the one-particular-game's worth of the 2014-15 49er offseason that put them where they are now, which is where they so richly deserve to be.

6)  As always, Dr. D gleefully flings his noodlings out before he reads anything else post-game.  Even worse, he merely watches select football games (those played by the Seahawks).  So if this is all unspeakably naive ... dial 1-800-[(10x)(13i)^3]-[sin(xy)/3.14159].   Or simply hop over to Breitbart.com.

ZACK COZART

I hadn't been aware that the Mariners came this close to dealing for him this July.  Guess I missed the memo.

Also loved, loved, loved this little comment, from Angelsfan31, in the user thread:

.

I don’t trust Dipoto with these types of deals. He almost always overpays which is great news if you’re a Reds fan.

.

Dr. D also would pay $1.25 on the dollar for any trade involving minor leaguers going out for quality major leaguers in return.  Angelsfan31 missed his own memo, that being the manner in which the 1951-1964 Yankees won pennants:  by trading hyped minor leaguers for quality players from teams under .500.

Didn't say we would pay $2.50 on the dollar.  But you had better believe SSI would throw in an extra Daniel Missaki to close escrow on a player who would swing games in the AL West.  Angelsfan31 brought Dr. D to the sudden realization that there are two people in the world who are ahead of the curve on this concept, and one of them currently runs the Mariners.

Don' come back until you have your men, JeDi.

.

Here is a Cozart article from Fangraphs crediting an inside-out swing for Cozart's two-year ability to drive the ball.  It is from July, when it was dubious about Cozart's ability to continue to slug .400-and-plenty, but declares Cozart a "borderline All-Star" if he could keep it up.

Cozart was injured in the second half and slugged .312 in a few games, but Jerry Dipoto has banged the gavel down and declared the ISO to be valid.  Here is one more article declaring the proposed deal to be Luis Gohara and ? for Cozart.  That sounds more like $1.30 on the dollar :- ) but hey.  Make sure you are happy with the house you buy, and you'll never regret paying a bit more when you got it.  And Luis Gohara, while tantalizing, is not to be confused with Taijuan, Marte and O'Neill for an impact player.

I made that comparison over on the Cigar Thoughts thread at Field Gulls, except that I used the first Rocky.  Creed beat him up for 15 rounds, yet still Rocky "had him in the 14th and the 15th he was goin'".

The stat sheet doesn't tell the story of the absolutely heroic (in the sporting world's substitution of sports for real life war) battle(s) engaged in by this defense.  A tie in this game isn't a win because you should have lost statistically.  A tie in this game is win because of the heroism of refusing to give up after taking the opponents' best shots on a night when they were better than you.  Thomas saving the TD late in the 4th.  Lane (I think) saving the TD after Sherman was beaten (for the only time all night).  Those guys never giving up on a play showed exactly why you never give up on a play.

It was pure sports battle, and although we emotionally want a victor, it's impossible not to appreciate just how epic an effort like that really was.  This is a victory tie you can really hang your hat on.

Thanks Russ.  We seem almost incapable of seeing things differently :- )

O'Neill at .250-.314-.594 with 3 HR's in 32 AB's.  13 K's in his 34 PA's however.

Marlette is 5/15 with 2 2B's and a HR.

Heredia is 4/10 with 2 2B's and a 3B/

Unsworth has an ERA of 1.50 in 6 innings.

Gohara is at 6.35 in 5.2 innings.  Here's the rub, however.  He has 10 K's and only 1 BB in those 5.2 innings.  No starts.  He's started in all 48 of his MLB games.

If we keep Gohara (and I could trade him for multiple years of Cozart, but not 1 year) then I want us to skip him up to Jasckson and bypass the Cali league.  Let's force feed him.  The guy has stuff.  He's not learning to pitch throwing to A-Ball guys.

5

O'Neil needs to get those K's under control or he'll be in danger of a Carlos Peguero career arc. MLB pitchers will just abuse him.

7

Gohara is a roll at the LH power pitcher with decent control dice.  And he seems to be in a bit of a hurry.

For one year of a decent SS (who I like), I'm not trading away that roll.

8

I know we kid about Dipoto and his trades, and that the farm is being rebuilt at the same time Dipoto selective trades away a piece here and there...

But the last few names were released of the players who were named later in earlier trades, the M's farm system has only two viable left handed starting pitchers - Gohara abd Yarbrough. Moreover, there has been a fair amount of talk of making Yarbrough a reliever like Diaz... so if Gohara is traded...

//Dipoto and Servais, hudled in Jerry's 'second office', a windowless, iron clad bunker 75' below Edgar's Cantina//

JD: OK, we agreed to exchange our Xmas lists early--what've you got?

SS: Well, we scored more runs this year than anyone thought we ever would again.  The fans got happy--I got happy--so I say we double down.

JD:  I knew it!  Exactly the same wavelength.  We can create the best lineup in history!

SS: Boss, I just know this is where we're destined to go...

//Jerry jumps up from his desk, an evil glint in his eye, and rushes out the door...//

JD: ...Just let me get to a phone!

//exactly four minutes and 38 second later, the door crashes open again, and Jerry now is shedding tears of joy...//

JD: We did it--take a look at this!  Merry Christmas!

SS: //surveys quickly// wait--J.D. Martinez in left?  Braun in right?  Ryan Zimmerman at first?  We'll score a million runs!!

JD: Good times ahead, my friend...

SS: But what did you have to give up?

JD: Not that much, really.  O"Neill...Walker...Paxton...Marte...Gohara...Unsworth...a couple other arms I can't remember.  But what difference does it make? This lineup will make other staffs absolutely melt.

SS: Yeah, and we've still got one certified 'name' on the mound--there's only one King.  Stottlemyre can figure out the rest.  We WILL score a million!

Now, this scenario would scare me to death.  Can't see much sense in putting all your eggs in run scoring...and ignoring run prevention.

But if you make the simple switch from baseball to football...from offense to defense...isn't this exaftly what Carroll and Schneider have done?

I don't think I'll ever get the 'genius' depictions of them....

10

One of yer best Diderot, and thass sayin' a lot...

If Carroll has 'genius' it is in his 40+ years of football brought to a 2016 max PSI while not being left behind ... 9 of 10 HOF coaches get lost behind the advancing knowledge ... that, and his ability to reach the modern athlete...

Odd to me that his old-style football translates so beautifully to the state-of-the-art.

#92 is Sealver Siliga, 6-2, 345, 6th year, was on our practice squad last year, also has been with NE, Denver, and SF; job description is immovable object in the middle of the D-line. A flexible non-roster player who replaces another one, Garrison Smith, (knee surgery) whom we picked up from SF after they released him in pre-season. An example of John Schneider’s steady churn at the bottom of the roster.

Post-game comments have been interesting. Pete Carroll from his KIRO show: “I’ve never been around a group like this. I’ve never been around a team—because they’ve been together so long. I’ve never been so impressed with the people and the character and the makeup, and also their willingness to fit together and allow guys to be who they are and accept and love who they are, but yet still find a way to make it mix so well. This is a remarkable group.” Not just tolerating but encouraging individuality (even to the point of eccentricity) and having that not conflict with but actually support and enhance a winning team culture is a pretty cool achievement.

The Mariners finally seem to be creating a positive culture all across their system, as Shannon Drayer has reported. Pretty remarkable one-year turnaround in their minor league win/loss record plus widespread improvement in individual results.

12

Your prediction for Siliga this year?

and ya, nice to know that Carroll is as taken with this group as we are.  Personally think it is a 'remarkable' jell of talent and personality also.  Sounds like it looks that way to you too Lampoon.  don' be a stranger :- )

Interesting to speculate what team PCJS could build with no salary cap. In the event, they have decided to devote the least in monetary resources to the offensive line, on which they spend less than 6% (on 9 players) of their salary cap, #32 (last) in the league. The most is Oakland at 22.92%; Super Bowl Champion Denver is #30 at 9.68% (both on 10 players).

PCJS have done it through the draft, UDFA’s and unrestricted free agents who are barely average and therefore inexpensive. They finally have a G-C-G core of a 4th #134 (Glow), a 2nd #64 (Britt) and a 1st #31 (Ifedi) draft picks. Tackles are tough to find – only 4 were listed in NFL Network’s top 100 players vs 15 defensive edge rushers -- and a high draft pick is no guarantee of success. They have gone with the best athlete and coach ‘em up route, and so have a converted tight end (Gilliam) and a basketball player (Fant) playing right and left tackle. Only official backup is Webb, who is barely average. It will be interesting to see if they make any moves, but I will not be surprised to see Fant start, especially since the Saints defense is among the league’s worst. Fant is a physical freak – 6’5” 295lbs, 37” vertical & 4.83 Forty. If Cable can get Gilliam and Fant to play up to their athletic potential, they could have an elite, cost-controlled offensive line for a long time. But, it ain’t there yet.

Good article and great responces. That game was epic. Comments: Thanks for the Fant 411.

One dissention on the comment of no offense on the Hawks: Russel Wilson can't run. Wilson # 19 in passing yards, #15 in passer rating, Wilson has been injured all year. Normally I would assess Wilson as a top 10 even top 5 QB in the league but injured he is more or less what his stats say 15-20 that is a big drop off and explains a lot of the lack of offense on the year.

#2 Christian Michael is one of the true knuckleheads. I would like to get Rawls back ASAP. Every time CMIKE busts one for 7 yards he puts on the huge ( I can't believe how awesome I am) Smile, finger to mouth @ the crowd, his antice are annoying. The guy has done nothing with his career and Wilson writes him motivational notes to get him to meetings.

If M Lynch motivated the team with his heart passion and power running do you think Mr. Mike might be an oppisit in a way?

Big O comes down to Wilson (injured) Jimmy G. (recovering) & pass catchers. The wierd lack of $ to the O-line has been there but MVP Tom Cable will coach em up.

If Wilson does not recover his running ability it is like Felix with 91 MPH.
