LATE is the HOUH in which this CONJURER chooses to APPEAR

Just the Fa'ax, Ma'am Dept.

With the Mainframe back from dry dock, having received a few well-placed swings of Eye-Gore's noggin against its side paneling, I think this is relatively accurate.  As of Thursday for the race for WC2.  Bold face teams are in the top 4.  The M's better get some mojo back on for the Orc series:

UP ON THE HILL!  IT'S GANDALF!

James Paxton and Felix Hernandez played catch on Monday at Safeco, and on Friday or Saturday (when the Mariners return home) they'll throw 20-25 pitches off a mound.  If no setbacks, they'd rejoin the rotation "as soon as mid-September," that being for the Rangers 4-gamer or the weekend 15-17th against the Astros.  The natural (optimistic) guess would be avoid the Wed-Thur stat missing the weekend series, so Friday 15 days on.  Such a schedule would also put James Paxton exactly on pace for the Wild Card play-in game.

Until then, it's Leake, then 3.1 innings pitched, then hold a barbecue, then Johnny Bullpen then 2.2 IP back to Leake.  Guy should help with our 6-inning bullpens, at least.

Look, I don't want to suggest that anyone who is still enjoying viewing this as a playoff race should stop. Baseball is fun, and should always remain so. But, serious question: does anyone really believe the Mariners aren't dead? They're 4.5 back of Minny, 3 of LAA, 2.5 of Balmer, and a nose behind TB and Arlington. Maybe we're better than a couple of those teams, although anyone who's watched this rotation the last couple weeks could be forgiven for questioning that. There's no way we're better than all of them. We are precluded on going on any extended winnings streaks by the gaping holes in our rotation, and given the way we're riding our bullpen things may actually get worse before they get better. When Pax and Felix return, it may take a couple weeks to shake off the rust and produce like Zeus or King Felix. Every modifier you could apply to our chances hurts us, not helps us.

We're dead. Have been for a while. I call my grandfather every week and talk Seattle sports. The last few weeks I've described the Mariners to him as zombies: we're still shambling around, and from a distance you might mistake our spastic movements for actual life. But as of this week, atrophy seems to have dropped our undead corpses to the pavement. Call the Mike Leake trade a death spasm if you must, but the fact remains, we're done for.

As in most situations like these, the problem of being -3 back (assuming Minny tanks) with 28 games to play is not the problem in itself.  The problem is that you're not yet playing better than the other teams.

Finishing at 84-78, +6 over .500, would probably win a WC spot (since you'd be beating your rivals) and from here that would require the M's to go 18-8.  They haven't looked like it this week.  If they continue to play .500ish baseball, they'll lose.

Whether or not the M's have looked good the last week, they've got less than a month left, and giving it their best effort is what sports are about :- )
