More on Andrew McCutchen
handfuls of impact talent out there in TRADE

.

They are discussing "McCutchen to the Mariners" at Brock and Salk.  Huard sez,

.

“I hope everything is on the table,” Huard said. “They don’t have, I don’t think, a ton of money to spend. This is not a rich free-agent class with lots of difference makers. Andrew McCutchen, you would be getting a little bit low off of his career numbers. Last year he was way down. I don’t think it’s the end of Andrew McCutchen.

I think it is very difficult predicting those things but I hope they are entertaining conversations (about White Sox All-Star pitcher) Chris Sale. … I hope they are entertaining conversations with proven difference makers in this league. That’s good news.”

.

Billy Zoom seems to think (if I read his esoteric comment correctly) that the MARINERS probably are moving on McCutchen talks as we speak, and that Morosi's "no deal" interpretation is his own.  Brock and Salk reacted similarly.

Mo' Dawg warns, Taijuan for McCutchen even steven might be paying too much, since you only get 2 years of McCutchen.

....

Dr. D gravitates to the idea that the 5th WAR -- the difference between 4.0 WAR and 5.0 WAR -- is worth much, much more than the difference between 1 WAR and 2 WAR.  You are going to pay a whale of a premium if you are going to sit at the table for the Erik Bedards and Chris Sale.  On paper, three years of Chris Sale does not equal four ML-ready club controls blue chippers, but that's what he's going to draw.  It is less about "net WAR per dollar" than it is about trying to achieve a Kansas City Royals "brand" markup ...

.....

This article out of New Jersey lists 5 marquee names up for trade:  Votto, McCutchen, Verlander, Braun, and Mauer ... not even mentioning Sale and Quintana.  Wow.  They sez,

.

McCutchen, Pittsburgh Pirates: At one time, trading McCutchen would have been pure blasphemy, but a down year and a growing salary have made this plausible. The Pirates may want some major league-ready players in return. Possible destinations: Giants, Blue Jays, Indians, Cardinals, A's, Phillies, Braves.

.

The same 4 teams are given as destinations for all 7 stars:  Dodgers, Giants, Phillies, Braves.  I s'pose AL teams need not apply.

Personally would be just as interested, if not more so, in an Opening Day Starter and making a second closer out of Taijuan :- )

BABVA,

Dr D

Sale (or similar) interests me quite a bit. Hey, McCutcheon does, too.  I'm not selling the farm for him.  The proposal was Walker/Vogs/Marte and an arm.  Yikes was my response.

Walker + prospects get it done? Aces win playoff games (and timely hitting). Chris Sale 2017!

The Ms really need an impact SP or two, they have nothing behind Paxton (either than hopefully Walker).

Problem is, Ms probably don't enough for Sale or Quintana. Short of dealing Paxton, which makes no sense.

Wouldn't mind gambling on Hill in FA.

Would Walker and Moore + young guys not named Gohara get Sale?  I think it would have to be more.  But if that is the price...count me WAY in.

Simple.

It will be a big bucks team in a big market with significant pieces, close to ready, to trade away.

Wasn't the number the Chicago's wanted before the July deadline last year "6 players"?

And now, in a barren SP market, with bidders breathing through their mouths?

Of course it is an attractive idea, and that's why Chicago will pull it's sox up.

No way M's go for a top of the rotation guy as they can't put up the ante to get into this arm.

4th or 5th, even a third SP?

Maybe.

Bat comes first.

Big name bat.

Reading back through this thread... a couple of proposals to spend Walker + for Sale- now, ~24 hours later, Jerry puts Jean Segura (+ parts) on our Thanksgiving tables, in exchange for two long-time Mariners-system soldiers that he clearly didn't value.

Yesterday I wrote a post- which got deleted- about how I preferred to go into battle with our own guys, developed through our system, for both emotional and practical reasons, than to trade them away for someone else's castoffs. Perhaps I'll recreate that. I also wrote one, that survived, in the next thread, on my preferred model for team creation (speed, defense, gap-power, first-pitch strikes.

All that said... I LOVE this trade, which seems to fit across alll those dimensions. Segura is a first-class shortstop who has added average and power- even OBP, although a bit light on the BBs- to his smooth glove. He finally recovered from the debacle of losing his nin-month-old son to put up a stellar performance in 2016. Haniger and Curtis are not simply throw-ins from the Mariners' perspective, who need RH OF help and LH bullpen arms. These two guys have potential to contribute in 2017; they fit my model of the team I want to watch and root for, and I look forward to seeing them contribute both as Rainiers and as Mariners.

When do the trucks leave? I'm ready to go to Peoria!
