My Northwest has five, count 'em, five ideas worth thinking about.  Servais hoping Dyson will fill more than platoon role.

...

“I would like to see what he can do against left-handed  pitching in spring training,” said Servais. “He can impact games in other ways than just the bat. I would like to give him an opportunity and see what happens.”

Last year in Kansas City Dyson had just 34 plate appearances against lefties and hit primarily 8th and 9th. He is looking forward to having the opportunity to settle in at the top of the order with the Mariners.

“I prefer to lead off. I feel like I get better there with more at bats I get,” he said.

....

The last line is NOIZ but Dyson's 12.6 WAR in 1,539 PAs is not.  Bump his 337 PA's last year up to just 440 and it pro-rates to 4.1 WAR, compared to Edwin Encarnacion's 3.9 last year and Nelson Cruz' 4.2 last year.   s' worth a try, is the point.  It wouldn't be a thang where you demand he hits Price and Sale; if there is the odd left-hander he can defend himself against, great.  It's a sound risk to take in Dyson's early 30's.

If Jarrod Dyson can get on base a little bit against lefties in the early going, that could be a 5th impact player on the roster.

Here's a throw cutting down Odour at 2B.

Here is a 3-SB game, two of third and one to put him into GWRBI position at 2B off a lefty.

Here's the steal of 3B off a perfect throw to turn around the 2014 Wild Card Game.

“I prefer to lead off. I feel like I get better there with more at bats I get,” he said.

Since 2013, Jarrod Dyson has batted significantly better as a Leadoff Hitter (.732 OPS) - more walks, less strike outs, a higher BABiP, homers dissapear but Doubles & Triples go up 50% - than he has otherwise (.682 OPS) (of note:  if you are not using Fangraphs Splits Tool and Splits Leaderboard, you're missing out).  This makes some sense if you consider that Jarrod Dyson, with his week contact and ability to beat out infield hits, is exactly the kind of player that would rather not see runners on base.  What's more, the more often Jarrod Dyson can reach base without someone like probable 8 hole hitter Mike Zunino clogging the basepaths, the more value his speed will have.  It could be that a guy with the confidence threshold that Jarrod Dyson seems to have, that feels comfortable with the spotlight, could get a boost from the vote of confidence the Mariners are sending.
